FRENCH JEOPARDAY - At the December 31 St. Martinville French Table, Ranger Jolene led a game of Jeopardy in Louisiana French, including Cajun and Creole New Year’s trivia. The winning team focused on high-dollar questions, earning them $3,800 imaginary dollars and the nickname “Gros Dépenseurs” (Big Spenders)! Visiting from Quebec was Samuel Cyr, far right. St. Martinville French Table meets every Wednesday from 10 a.m. - 11 a.m. at at Longfellow-Evangeline State Historic Site

The French Colonial Empire in North America: Explorers, Soldiers and Descendants is a non-fiction, encompassing an overview of New France, including Acadia, Upper and Lower Louisiana, and of Spanish Louisiana.

The self-published book by Virginia Bonin Stiles brings Louisiana’s colonial history to the forefront. Mrs. Stiles follows a line of ancestors from New France to the Attakapas Country, explorers, soldiers and their descendants among the first settlers of colonial Louisiana, a wilderness outpost.

Follow their struggles and their successes as they make Louisiana their home long before the Louisiana purchase and statehood. Meet some of the people who were here when the Acadians made their arrival. See the comparisons of their adventurers alongside the development of the thirteen colonies that would one day, combined, be the United States of America. As we prepare for the 250th anniversary of the birth of our country, read about the people who were already settled here and would soon be part of “the great experiment”, a free nation, by and for the people.

The French Colonial Empire in North America: Explorers, Soldiers and Descendants can be purchased at Amazon. com or at Books Along the Teche in New Iberia.
