100 Years Ago January 23, 1926

Mrs. A. A. Anding, President of the Longfellow - Evangeline Memorial park, was here to confer with the local committee to get options on adjoining land, to make the park 200 acres, which is the amount necessary for an approved national park.

The well being drilled by the Gulf Company near Catahoula was abandoned this week, for the reason that the drillers struck a bed of salt, which is one of the best indications that oil is there. The derrick is being moved a mile from this spot, and another well will be put down. It appears that the salt dome in that section is a large one.

The price of sweet potatoes is now $2 per barrel, which is considered one of the best crops at this price. The potatoes sold for a short time at $1 but few sold at that price.

“My Girl” the smartest musical comedy of the season, will play at the Elks Theatre, New Iberia.

The Columbian Assurance Mutual Society held a meeting to install their newly elected officers for the year, and after the installation ceremony, a nice supper was served to the members. The new officers installed were: Jas. F. Halphen, President; L. V. Simon, Vice-President; C.T. Bienvenu, Chaplain; R. P. Halphen, Secretary; R. J. Gary, Treasurer; Andre Bienvenu, Pilot; Dewey J. Fournet, Councelor; Paul Resweber, Herald; Mizael Bernard, Picket; Anatole Bienvenu, Guardsman; and F. S. Bienvenu, Auditor.

January 21, 1976

Alvin “Papit” Guidry of Parks was elected president of the La. Association of Nurserymen at its 25th annual convention.

Parish Homemaker officers were: Parks: Mrs. James Babin, president; Mrs. Clifford Mouton, vice president; and Mrs. Anthony Champagne, secretary-treasurer.

Stephensville: Mrs. Mazie Landry, president; Mrs. Audrey Arceneaux, vice president; and Mrs. Sandra Gross, secretary-treasurer.

Debbie Dunham was presented as Queen Anne XXXX at the annual St. Martinville Rotary Club ball.

Staret Courville was elected chairman of the Highway/Heavy Division of the state’s largest construction trade association, the La. Division of the AGC Hwy, Heavy Municipal-Utilities Chapter.

Julian Barras reigned as King Beau Soileau and Teresa Albert was Queen Belle Etoille at the Catahoula children’s court. 25 Years Ago January 17, 2001

School board members took the first step on the long road to the hiring of a new superintendent last week when they agreed to immediately begin advertising for the position. A divided board had voted in December not to renew veteran Superintendent Roland Chevalier’s contract when it expired at the end of June.

Student Council representatives at Trinity Catholic School for the 2000-01 session included Andramica Etienne, president; Dustin Berard, vice president; Michelle George, secretary; and Kristen Oubre, Destinie Carroll, Kacey Guidry, Jenna Neuville, Lauren Sonnier, Ryan Buillard and Danielle Capritto.
