Back in January 1974 the United States was experiencing an oil shortage and the price of gasoline had “soared” past 50 cents a gallon. As part of a nationwide effort to reduce the consumption of the fuel, speed limits of 60 MPH on twolane highways and 70 MPH on four-lane roads were reduced to 55 MPH.
