100 Years Ago January 16, 1926

The Stock Holders of the Bank of St. Martinville held their annual meeting at the banking rooms of the Bank and elected the following board of directors: R. Martin, Mrs. A.L. Domengeaux, Mrs. J. J. Burdin, W. H. Cozine, Jas. J. Martin, Dr. J. L. Beyt, L.C. Levert, P. A. Bienvenu and Albert Bienvenu. After the Stock Holders meeting, the board of directors held meeting and reelected the same officers, who were: R. Martin, President; Albert Bienvenu, Vice- President and Cashier, P.A. Bienvenu, Assistant Cashier. M. Ducrest, Bookkeeper; and Miss Anna Fournet, Assistant Bookkeeper.

The management of the Elks Theater, with much pride and pleasure, announced the coming of the greatest thriller of them all, with a laughing gallop “The Gorilla” with the famous comic sleuths, Mr. Mulligan and Mr. Garrity, direct from its twelve rearing months at the Selwyn Theatre, New York City; seven months at the Harris Theatre, Chicago; and two months at the Plymouth Theatre, Boston.

The prediction that should next year be another good cotton year such as 1925, cotton throughout the South would be selling for six cents a pound, was made by Commissioner of Agriculture Harry D. Wilson, in speaking before the annual meeting of the Louisiana farm and demonstration agents in Baton Rouge.

It is reported that all standing cane is killed and spoiled and condemned by the mills. We learned that the St. John refinery tried to make sugar of this cane, but without success. The little sugar content that was in the cane before the last severe freeze, had been destroyed. The loss will be heavy on some of the farmers, it is estimated that about two thousand tons will be lost in this parish.

50 Years Ago

January 14, 1976

Two special committees were appointed to study the feasibility of incorporating the Cecilia community into a municipality.

Mrs. Nathan Dupuis was elected president of the Breaux Bridge Homemakers Club. Mrs. Dan Broussard was chosen vice president; and Mrs. Gus Guidry, secretary-treasurer.

Pedro Angelle chairman of the St. Martin Soil and Water Conservation District, was presented an award for outstanding performance as a supervisor for 15 years.

Sandra Guidry was the winner of the parish 4-H Sew with Cotton Contest.

Paulette James was selected queen of the 1976 Winter Festival Court. Members of her court were Regina Savoy, Veronica Jones and Brenella Francis.

40 Years Ago

January 15, 1986

Final steps were being taken to provide a state loan of $1.5 million to Louisiana Crawfish Wholesalers, a group of 16 independent crawfish processors, who planned to build a packing and freezing facility in St. Martin Parish to serve the out-ofstate marketing needs of Louisiana’s crawfish industry.

The fate of the old St. Martinville Sr. High School building on Port Street was still uncertain after the school board tabled the discussion of the possible demolition of the twostory facility.

25 Years Ago January 10, 2001

A public forum attracted dozens of St. Martin and area residents some waving signs with photos of illegal parish trash sites and drew mostly positive responses to the parish council’s initiative to award a one-company contract for rural garbage pickup.

Officers of the Jr. Beta Club at Trinity Catholic School included Danielle Capritto, president; Lauren Sonnier, vicepresident; Jy Babin, secretary; Valarie Derouen, chaplain; and Brittany Chataignier, reporter.

The St. Martin Humane Society notified the public by placing signs that said abandoning animals was prohibited by law at the Butte LaRose Bridge, Catahoula Levee, Lake Martin and two other locations around the parish.

The portion of the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge in St. Martin Parish - at 9.3 miles, just more than half of the span - saw the lowest level in crashes in the past seven years.
