Peabody wins Darrel Mitchell Holiday Classic

Cecilia High boys reach consolation finals

– Peabdy blasted New Iberia 58-36 Monday in the championship game of the Darrel Mitchell Sr. Holiday Classic basketball tournament at St. Martinville Senior High.

NISH advanced to the title game with wins over Comeaux (47-37) on Saturday and Rayne (52-39) on Sunday.

Peabody beat Northside 78-39 on Saturday and Lafayette High 5845 on Sunday.

Lafayette beat Rayne 65-36 in the third-place game.

Cecilia advanced to the boys’ consolation finals with wins over Loreauville (58-20) and Breaux Bridge (48-43) after falling to Northside 50-47 in the Bulldogs’ tournament opener.

Breaux Bridge fell to Comeaux 53-45 in its opening game of the tournament.

Breaux Bridge trailed only 16-14 after one quarter but the Spartans opened the lead to 29-20 by halftime and outscored the Tigers 16-9 in the fourth quarter to pull away.

Cottrell Gordon led Breaux Bridge with 13 points and Nelson Borel added 8.

Terrance Roy had 15 points to lead Comeaux. Charles Lee and Khalil Johnson added 13 apiece. The Spartans won despite going only 3-for-22 at the free throw line.

BBHS hit 11 of 19 foul shots in the game.

St. Martinville Senior High dropped its two games in the tournament, falling to Lafayette 74-36 on Friday and to Breaux Bridge 57-43 on Saturday.

Lafayette blew the game open in the middle two quarters, stretching a 17-14 lead after one quarter to 44-20 at halftime and to 60-27 at the end of the third period.

Liam Rountree led the Mighty Lions with 19 points and Sprague Hebert added 18. Kam’ron Brown had 14 points and Jaleel Sinegal had 13 as four players finished in double figures for LHS. The Lions were 4-for-6 at the foul line as the two teams combined to shoot only eight free throws between them.

Kristian Batiste led SMSH with 9 points. Lyle Potier and Andre Jones had 7 each.

Breaux Bridge jumped out to a 24-3 first-quarter lead over St. Martinville in a second- day matchup between the two St. Martin Parish squads.

SMSH trimmed that lead to 31-21 by halftime and to 39-31 after three quarters but BBHS outscored St. Martinville 18-7 in the fourth period to pull away.

Nelson Borel led Breaux Bridge with 21 points, hitting two 3-pointers and converting nine of 12 free throws. Cottrell Gordon added 13 points and Rylen Noel had 8.

Kervin Fontenette led St. Martinville with 13 points, hitting three 3-pointers on the night. Kristian Batiste had 11 and Marc Floyd added 9.

St. Martinville – New Iberia and Westgate faced off Monday in the girls’ championship game of the Darrel Mitchell Sr. Holiday Classic at St. Martinville Senior High.

New Iberia beat St. Martinville 36-21 and Westgate beat Beau Chene 42-18 on Friday to open the tournament.

On Saturday, Westgate beat Cecilia 55-35 and New Iberia beat Breaux Bridge 39-22.

In Sunday games, Cecilia beat St. Martinville 27-19 and Beau Chene beat Breaux Bridge 4439 in the consolation bracket.

Cecilia faced Beau Chene in the third-place game Monday.
