Town of Henderson dispute with MPERS continues

Henderson — An update on the long-running dispute with the Municipal Police Employees Retirement System (MPERS) was the main topic at the Henderson Town Council’s December meeting.

The town has been dealing with the MPERS issue for several months.

“They set up a meeting, rescheduled it, then scheduled it again,” Mayor Sherbin Collette said. “Hopefully this next meeting will bring some movement on the issue.”

City attorney Jerry Mallett also updated the council on an insurance claim involving an accident between a semitruck and a town police vehicle. The police car was declared a total loss after the collision.

“The insurance company is dragging its feet,” Mallett said. “I’ve finally received the necessary information and can now move forward.”

Mallett also addressed the mayor’s court magistrate position, explaining that the original appointee is unable to serve due to a serious injury. He is currently looking for another qualified candidate to fill the role.

Following a spirited discussion about who should cover certain costs related to the wreck between the semitruck and police cruiser, the council approved the town’s financial reports for November and December.

The council also passed a resolution allowing Mayor Collette to sign all documents pertaining to capital outlay for the town’s sewer system project. Members additionally discussed replacing several broken or missing streetlights.

With no other business on the agenda, the council adjourned until its next meeting in 2026.
