Baja St. Martin

The sun is shining this morning which is taking the chill out of the air. It was cool this morning, but not as bad as a few days ago and the weather app on my phone says its going up to be 71. I went to the boat landing with the dog and found a spot on a concrete bench in the direct sun - no wind - it was wonderful. I could feel my old bones warming. Hopefully I can do that today again.

Yoga for Seniors was cancelled. The Tuesday session had only three people which was ok, but I have heard that many of those who come on Wednesdays would not make it. Two were still on a long cruise, one was babysitting, one or two had the flu. I don’t mind having a class with just three people, but not one by myself. We haven’t decided yet if we should just postpone more classes until after Christmas. I’ll let people know.

Bingo for Seniors is still scheduled for Dec. 16. Food for Seniors will not take place until sometime in late January. Although the timing is a bit off, I want to thank Mrs. Charlar Brew, the St Martin Parish library director who goes out of her way to send me a box of Spice of the Month samples. I usually give them out with Food for Seniors. And I want to apologize to the gentleman who brought the box of Spice samples to my house very early this morning and was accosted by my dog. The poor man literally had to throw the box at the dog to keep him away. That’s not usually what happens. And I don’t know who the man was so whomever, thank you so much and I’m so sorry the dog was a problem. I suggested the man just put the next box on my car for safety.

Mrs. Brew had called me to say that she and the LSU Nutrition person, Maria Gonzales for Assumption Parish, had worked out some deal and Maria would be handling St. Martin Parish plus Assumption.

My copies of the Teche News are not always current. I just received a November issue which had the School Performance Scores for the parish on the front page. Two of the schools, Stephensville Elementary and Cecilia High were the only two receiving an A rating. In Assumption Parish, which is where I taught, I think Pierre Part was the only school that got an A. Makes you wonder what these schools are doing that is so good. I personally believe that being small has a definite influence. Now that the 7th and 8th graders have been taken away from Pierre Part, that school is pretty small and I know Stephensville has always been small.

I guess it would be too foolish to suggest that all schools should be small, even though it might make them better. Public education is what it is. I’m not totally convinced that size is the problem. I do think the responsibility for education of our children is on the parents and that might be something to work on. Perhaps some parents send their kids off to school and figure they’ve done their job— that’s it.

My primary education was a long, long time ago but I can still remember having Spelling Bees at the school and my parents would be there. They bought my books, too. And I took care of them because they were expensive and my folks weren’t happy to buy replacements. Oh, how things have changed! Now I’m getting into the old fogey territory so have a good week, keep warm. Life!
