100 Years Ago December 5, 1925

The large cotton crop of this year, which proved much longer than all expectations, is causing the cotton planters of all the southern states some worry, and they are contemplating a meeting at Atlanta or Mississippi, to use their efforts in much reducing the acreage of cotton for the next crop, in order to have a fair price for their next crop.

Provisions of the Louisiana primary law required quadrennial registration of all voters, and by reason thereof the present Great Register automatically be annulled at midnight Dec. 31, after which there will be no such thing as a registered voter in the state until January 2.

A most interesting article appeared in Sunday’s New York Times Magazine section, written by Mary Belle McKeller (The Spirit of Evangeline Wonders Once More Beneath the Oak Trees Along Bayou Teche at St. Martinville, La.,) with two illustrations namely a picture of Miss Mildred Dessens, dressed in a typical Evangeline costume with a delightfal background. The other picture was of the Evangeline Oak looking across the Bayou and in the back ground appeared the tall Gothic steeple of the Catholic Church.

Southwestern Louisiana Institute was admitted to full membership in the Association of Southern Colleges and Secondary schools of the Southern States on Friday December 4th.

50 Years Ago

December 3, 1975

Parish students initiated into the USL chapter of Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society for education majors were Patricia Buford and Peggy Courville of Breaux Bridge; and Similian Courville and Jacques Lasseigne Jr. of St. Martinville.

Newly elected officers of the Evangeline Tri-Parish Chapter of Phi Beta Lambda were Sylvia Pitre, president; Diana Thomas, vice president; Gale Tate, secretary: Terry Polk, treasurer; and Kathy James, chaplain.

Lewis Ledlow of Breaux Bridge was among the 30 top students at USL selected for inclusion in “Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities.”

Mrs. Elsie Castille of Breaux Bridge was the recipient of the “Outstanding Home Economics Alumnus Award.” She was selected by over 500 of her peers from around the state for the honor.

40 Years Ago

December 6, 1985

Anne M. Dupré of Breaux Bridge was among 44 University of Southwestern Louisiana students selected for inclusion in the 1986 edition of Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities.

Elected officers of the St. Martinville Sr High Beta Club were Dernil Albert, president; Barry Blanchard. vice president; Kimberly Chambers, secretary; and Tami Bonin, treasurer.

Spence Arnaud of Cecilia High earned the National Forensic League’s Degree of Distinction.

St. Martinville athletes who were named to the first team in the District 5-AAAA All District voting were Dexter Harrison, Jimmie Poirier, David Jean-Batiste, Harry Pickney, Scott Hebert and Adam Pierre. Second team members were Dwayne Fontenette, Jason Dugas and Nolan Narcisse. Cliff Champ was named Defensive Most Valuable Player and Coach Carroll Delahoussaye was named Coach of the Year.

25 Years Ago

December 6, 2000

The much anticipated widening of Breaux Bridge’s busy Rees Street moved one step closer to being coming a reality when city officials awarded the contract for the relocation of utilities on the La. 328 route.

St. Martinville Sr. High All District football players included Deyontae Batiste, Jacob Guidry, Darren Jones and David Willis. Veteran Coach Carroll Delahoussaye, whose Tigers reigned as 2000 league champs, was voted Coach of the Year.

Members of the Breaux Bridge High School volleyball team who received Division III, District 3 All-District honors included Terri Seneca, Precious Williams, Erica Blackwell and Alicia Carnell. Coach Judy H. Romero was named Coach of the Year.
