50 Years Ago

November 12, 1975

Adult leaders of Scouting in the Cecilia area were recognized and awarded Service Stars for their volunteer work. Women honored were Mrs. Clarence Melancon, Mrs. Louis Guidry, Mrs. Benoit Guidry, Scoutmaster John Benoit and Asst. Scoutmaster L.J. Melancon.

The Town of Arnaudville was the first area community to officially celebrate the 200th anniversary of the American Bicentennial Revolution with a week-long celebration.

Cubmaster Robert Leblanc presented Bobcat badges to three Cub Scouts of Pack 397 in Breaux Bridge. They included Christopher Pontiff, Kevin Latiolais and Bobby Ray Angelle Jr.

Members of the Teche Elementary 5th grade 4-H program committee included Lisa Guidry, Stella Lalonde, Clifton Robin, Liz Robin, Martha Noel, Gloria Courville and Kristine Guidry.

November 13, 1985

The St. Martinville Sr. High football coaching staff that directed the Tigers to the 5-AAAA Championship in the school’s first year in the Quad-A ranks included head coach and athletic director Carroll Delahoussaye, assistants John Sopko, Mike Kreamer, Andy Lasseigne, Darrell Mitchell and Richard Cassell.

Newly-elected Mercy High school students council representatives included Layle Pharr, Lisa Fontenette, Jennifer Grevemberg and Belinda Fontenette.

November 15, 2000

Four bids for the collection and disposal of residential solid waste in the rural areas of St. Martin Parish were opened with the lowest tendered by Teche Trans, Inc., of New Iberia at $6.70 per month, a drastic drop from the $14 rural residents were paying.

A highlight of Veterans Day in St. Martinville was the dedication of the Blue Star Memorial Highway marker presented to the parish by the St. Martinville Garden Club and the National Council of State Garden Clubs. The marker is located along West Port Street (La. 96) at the front of the Parish Government headquarters and honors the Armed Forces that have defended the United States of America.

Louisiana State Police issued 27 citations on the Atchafalaya Basin/I-10 in St. Martin Parish for speeding/following too close over a 2½-hour time span, from 9:30 to 11 a.m. State Troopers responded to complaints of aggressive drivers on the elevated portion of I-10 over the Basin by using radar at milepost 117 eventually issuing tickets for violations ranging, from 70 mph to 85 mph.

Charlene Hill, CMC, clerk of the village of Parks, was accepted as the 445th member into the second level membership of the IIMC Master Municipal Clerk Academy.

Cardinal Gerald Cyprien Lacroix, Archbishop of the Diocese of Quebec, celebrated the S. Martin de Tours Catholic Church 250th Church Anniversary Mass closing out the year long celebration of the 250th anniversary of the church parish.

Camille Quebodeaux of Catahoula, was crowned the 79th International Rice Festival Queen in Crowley.

The Cecilia High School Chapter of the National Honor Society inducted 38 new members during a banquet held at Crawfish Town USA. Elected officers include President Owen Usie; Vice President Erin Jeanne Blanchard; Secretary/ Treasurer Grace Baum; and Reporter/Historian Carsyn Brazell.
