I slept late this Sunday morning with the sound of rain on the roof. An occasional flash of lightning. But by 9 a.m. the sun was out. It is cool and very quiet.
This was a busy week. The Lower St. Martin Parish Recreation Board had a meeting on Oct. 27. Other than the board members I was the only one in attendance. I want to say here that I’m really pretty disgusted with my fellow residents who couldn’t bother to come. Many of them are quick to complain when they don’t get something, or a service isn’t available, but here is a chance to be involved and they don’t even show up.
Chair Yoga classes are continuing. One on Tuesday evenings at 5:45 p.m. and the next on Wednesday morning at 10:00 a.m. We’re progressing to a little more strenuous program. No on the floor stuff but sitting in a chair and standing holding on to the chair. I don’t think we will ever advance to more physical Yoga, whatever it’s called. These classes are for seniors not young people. I am enjoying a bit more flexibility and for sure, feel my balance might be improving. Nobody has declared a massive weight loss but several have said they feel a weight shift. A little tighter around the middle. Anyway, come join us if you’re over this way.
Food for Seniors was Oct. 30 and to date I don’t know if this will be the last distribution before Christmas or the last one ever. I keep hearing about the SNAP program being cut but I don’t think this food is part of that program. In the past there have been double boxes about this time but not a word has been said about that. So, it will be just the regular I hope. Good news! I was told that there will be double box distribution in Nov. (not sure of the date yet) and then no more until after Christmas. I’m so pleased.
And the Spice of the Month program continues for now. Hard to know what will happen in the future with that.
I had a nice, long phone conversation with my Cecilia friend, Huet Hebert this morning. It was so great talking with him. Huet had gone to the library and checked out several books on Hummingbirds so he was able to share with me all the things he’d found out. For a man who tells me he isn’t a reader, Huet sure soaks up a lot of information. I didn’t’ know that hummingbirds like to splash in plain water now and then to wash their bodies off. All the feeding gets them pretty dirty and they need to get clean now and then. Also Mr. Huet told me a clever way to keep ants out of hummingbird feeders. They can be a problem. I don’t think I can describe his method in detail but it involved hanging the feeder on a long coat hanger, with a bent end where a plastic cup could be inserted and filled with water. The ants can’t or won’t get past the water. I think he mentioned a way to keep bees away from the feeders also, but I can’t remember what that was. I am going to go to my local library tomorrow and check out some hummingbird books.
The cold front has arrived, quietly but firmly. It rained during the night and the temperature is in the 50s this morning. I’m desperately dragging out warm clothes, which, unfortunately don’t fit, but will have to make do for now. Good excuse to go shopping.
