Tigers fall to in District 5-4A road contest
Opelousas – The Breaux Bridge Tigers had their run game going but a turnover helped give Opelousas a little breathing room and OHS pulled out a 41-21 win over their District 5-4A rival on Friday.
Breaux Bridge (2-7 overall, 1-2 District 5-4A) piled up 160 yards on 39 running attempts but completed only four of 12 pass attempts for 72 yards and missed on several gimmick plays that found receivers open downfield.
“We were holding strong,” BBHS coach Tyler Pierce said. “Offensively we were doing some things well. It was 21-14 at half and we even got an onside kick after half, but defensively we’re still struggling to find our identity. “We had a crucial turnover that led to a touchdown where they got ahead. That was I think about the 40-yard line. Really the score didn’t reflect the game. We played okay but we just got beat.”
Shawnee Lewis ran 14 times for 82 yards and had two receptions for 25 yards, including a TD.
Baylon Champagne added 69 yards on the ground with two touchdowns on 21 runs.
Quarterback Caynon Ardoin completed four of 10 attempts for 72 yards with a touchdown, and Isaiah LeBlanc had two catches for 47 yards.
“We did a double pass that was off the fingertips,” Pierce said. “We did a little hitch and go that was overthrown. When we watched film there were about three or four games that we felt good about, especially because of how run-heavy we’ve been. They opened up some gadget plays. We were 0-for-4 on gadget plays.”
Champagne led the defense with four tackles and Dakowen Celestine and Cruz Trail had three tackles each.
The Tigers opened the game with a 13-play drive, chewing up seven minutes of the clock, but didn’t get points out of it.
“We controlled the line of scrimmage,” Pierce said. “The first half we were starting to find the end zone. The second half, though, I feel we had at least two (drives) that should’ve been some easy scores. That made the difference in just being balanced in making the calls that would’ve kept them on their heels.”
BBHS closes out the regular-season at home for senior night against Livonia (4-5 overall, 1-2 district).
“Offensively we just need to pick up where we left off last week,” Pierce said. “We just need to find the end zone, find a way to make those plays. Defensively we just need to come up with a few of the stops so it doesn’t feel like it’s either score or bust on offense.”
The coach said the seniors are eager to go out on a positive note for senior night at home.
