BB council approves zoning adjustments

Breaux Bridge – The Breaux Bridge City Council’s September meeting focused on several zoning adjustments and a key tax-related ordinance.

Council members approved a zoning change along Grand Point Avenue, from Poydras Street to Doyle Melancon Road, reclassifying the area to C-1. This new designation allows for mixed commercial and residential use. Additionally, two other properties along Grand Point Avenue were rezoned to R-3, shifting them from their previous commercial status to residential.

The council also introduced an ordinance to adopt a Master Plan allocating 80 percent of funds from Special Taxing District No. 1 for the Mills Avenue extension. The project will stretch from the frontage road to I-10 in the city’s southwestern section.

During his financial report, Mayor Ricky Calais informed the council that the city’s fiscal year revenues are slightly ahead of projections. However, when viewed on a calendar year basis, revenues remain flat. He also noted that the city currently sits $177,000 over budget, a figure that excludes seasonal income yet to be collected.

In other updates, Mayor Calais reported that water line improvements on Goldie Drive, Lena Drive, and Gary Drive are progressing well and are expected to be completed by year’s end.

Council

The council authorized Police Chief to hire an additional patrol officer and approved an Act of Dedication and Acceptance for Phase II of the Atchafalaya Trace Subdivision.

Finally, the council voted to reappoint Kenneth LeBlanc to the St. Martin Economic Development Agency (SMEDA) board, where he will continue representing the city’s interests.
