October is Creole Heritage Month and St. Martinville has events planned on Oct. 25 and Oct. 26.
On Oct. 25, the African American Museum, located at 123 S. New Market St., invites all to gather starting at 7:00 am for coffee and breakfast refreshments. This will be followeed by a Creole language table for speaking and learning the Creole language. The museum will remain open until 4:30 p.m. for visitors to learn more about the history of Creoles of color in Louisiana and particularly in St. Martinville.
Music on the Market starts at 6:00 p.m. in front of the museum with live zydeco music in English and Creole French by Sha Mee Nou. Enjoy dancing, more great eats and shopping for crafts, jewelry and more from local vendors. Chairs are welcome but please no ice chests.
On Oct. 26, Longfellow- Evangeline State Historic Site will host events from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. At 2:00 p.m. in the AV room, join a sharing circle of Creole stories, language, music, art and more!
Visitors may also tour an 1815 Creole plantation home and cypress cabin for a glimpse into 19th century life along Bayou Teche.
