50 Years Ago

October 22, 1975

Marie deMahy of St. Martinville, a senior nursing student, was chosen USL Homecoming Queen and reigned over festivities at the university.

Kenneth Melancon of Cecilia Boy Scout Troop 23 was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout at a Court of Honor.

Members of the District III Honor Chorus from Cecilia High School were Millie Calais, soprano; Dean Angelle, Kenneth Angelle and David Broussard, bass; and Gregory Gautreaux, tenor. Broussard was also selected a member of the All-State Chorus.

Grocery prices included: Trappey Pork and Beans - 4/$1; Contadina Tomato Sauce - 6/$1; 25 lbs. Watermaid Rice - $5.79; and 8 pk. 7 oz. Pabst Beer - $1.35.

Mercy High 4-H officers were Beth Jefferson, president; Lynette Braud, vice president; Renee Doiron, secretary; Patty Ledoux, reporter; and Debbie Sylvester, program chairman.

Cecilia Cajun midget and peewee football team cheerleaders were Myra Angelle, Jamie Couvillion, Lisa Angelle, Dana Lanerie, Rachelle Devillier, Melissa Boudreaux, Jill Couvillion and Penny Calais.

Mercy High cheerleaders were Lark Landry, Keely Romero, Debbie Sylvester and Ashley Braud.

October 23, 1985

Members of the Quiz Bowl team at Breaux Bridge High School were Amy Joiner, Hailey Barron, Jamie Smith, Derek Kaupp, Robert Collier and Jason Perrodin.

Breaux Bridge High School 4-H officers were Leslie Devillier, president; Melinda Thibodeaux, vice president; Karen Degeyter, secretary; Chris Degeyter, reporter; Catherine Allemond, student council representative; and Sonya Borel and Paul Latiolais, pledge leaders.

French Club officers at Breaux Bridge High School were Michelle Roberts, president; Stacey Huval, vice president; Kim Jean Batiste, secretary; Suzanne Alexander, reporter; and Becky Theriot, treasurer.

Breaux Bridge Elementary Library Club officers were Darla Auguillard, president; Jackie Robertson, vice president; Bridgette Blanchard, secretary; Dianne Roy, assistant secretary; and Danielle Davis, treasurer.

St. Martinville Junior High Homecoming Court members were Ember Hebert, Denise Bernard, Janeia Bourda, Erica Lopez, queen; Peggy Bonin, Avis Simon, Karen Blanchard, Savannah Polite, Lisa Dohmann, Yolanda Colomb, Rachel Olivier, Vonetta Hypolite, Sarah Francois, Atlena Guillory, Emma Comeaux, Rebecca Stockstill, Pamela Bourque, Angela Celestine and Angel Capritto.

October 25, 2000

State Rep. Sydnie Mae Durand introduced a bill to seek a $50,000 grant to fund a feasibility study for a small-vessel-or light-draft port facility that would be built in the Butte LaRose or Whiskey Bay area.

Overall winners of the 4-H Poster Contest at Parks Primary were Courtnee Champagne and Hailey Pommier.

Catahoula fourth grade 4-H officiers included Kaylie Borel, president; Jarrett Devillier, vice president; Kristyn Blanchard, secretary; Amber Dupuis, treasurer; Emily Latiolais and Ashley Babineaux, pledge leaders; and Loren Breaux, program chairman.

The last of 26 new replacement fire hydrants was lowered into place at the corner of Main and Bridge Streets in Breaux Bridge. The new hydrants, with national standard fittings, are located throughout the city and replace old units which were no longer functional. The project cost the city about $45,000 but will help maintain the community’s excellent fire insurance rating and provide better fire protection for homes and businesses.

Breaux Bridge City Court Judge Randy R. Angelle was elected secretary of the La. Council of Juvenile and Family Court.

Chosen to serve on the 2015 homecoming court at St. Martinville Sr. High were Kamryn Vicknair, Kayln Cormier, Blake Duplechain, Cori Gauthier, Kelly Hulin, Baylie Christian, LaKaysha Batiste, Brooke Cormier, Tayonni Jean-Batiste and Gabriel Boudreaux.

Male students at St. Martinville Sr. High named to the school’s 2015 homecoming court were Mcgino Philayvanh, Maleik Whiteand Trevor Champagne, Craig LeBlanc, Reece Frederick and Stephen Joe.
