Cecilia swamps Beau Chene 47-14 in 5-4A tilt

Bulldogs rush for 298 yards in convincing win

– The Cecilia High Bulldogs piled up 406 offensive yards and jumped out to a 47-0 lead over Beau Chene on Friday on the way to a 47-14 win over the Gators that kept the Bulldogs unbeaten in District 5-4A play.

“Our guys really stepped up this week, defensively for sure, and played lights out,” Cecilia head coach Cody Champagne said. “Offensively we kind of got in our way a little bit, but then we found our groove and the guys made plays.”

The Bulldogs rushed for 298 yards with Braylon Calais gaining 120 yards and a touchdown on only two totes, and quarterback Collin Dore carrying five times for 96 yards and a touchdown. Deondre Briscoe and Layne Champagne also rushed for touchdowns. Dore also completed five of eight passes for 80 yards and two touchdowns, and Champagne went 2-for-3 for 28 yards.

Calais added two catches for 48 yards and a touchdown and Jermaine Davis Jr. had three catches for 47 yards and a TD.

Calais opened the scoring with a 47-yard TD catch from Dore and Dore scored on a 77-yard run in the first quarter. The Bulldogs tacked on 2-point conversions after both TDs.

Dore hooked up with Davis for a 25-yard touchdown in the second quarter and Calais added a 71-yard touchdown run for a 28-0 halftime lead.

Brandon Lejeune’s 41-yard fumble return for a touchdown opened the second-half scoring and the ’Dogs added a four-yard TD run by Briscoe and Champagne’s 58-yard TD run to finish off their scoring.

“We had a lot of oneplay (drives), one or two plays,” Champagne said. “We didn’t have many plays on offense.”

Beau Chene quarterback Cameron Simmons gave the Blue Gators their first touchdown on a 68-yard run and running back Chris Wheeler scored on a 32-yard run, both in the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs take on Opelousas (1-5, 1-0 district) on Friday for homecoming in a District 5-4A game.

“They’ve played some (good) teams now, early on just like we did,” Champagne said. “They’re a pretty good team. They’ve got a lot of scary kids out there.”

The visiting Tigers have a good kick return game with several touchdowns and long returns, and the quarterback does a good job of getting the ball to receivers who have the speed to go the distance, Champagne said.

“I think practice is big for us,” he said. “We’ve got to get better in practice. They move the ball on a lot of people and I think they’re starting to find their groove right now. Playing fast is important for us. They’ve got a lot of guys playing both ways.”

Champagne said the Bulldogs must do a better job of taking care of the football after losing four fumbles against Beau Chene, and must clean up the number of penalties as well.

“I think it’s going to be a four-quarter game,” he said. “We need to start fast. We hadn’t done that the previous four weeks, but the past two weeks we did so we’re trending on the right track. We haven’t beat a team yet that (was capable of beating) us, so that’s big for us. This is a team that could beat us, so we’ve got to win one of these games.”
