– St. Martinville’s offensive woes continued Friday night as the Tigers were shut out in a non-district game at Westgate.
Despite getting into the red zone twice in the contest, the Tigers couldn’t get any points on the board in a 22-0 loss to their longtime rivals.
“We weren’t able to run the ball, it all starts with that,” SMSH head coach Garrett Kreamer said. “When you struggle to run it, it puts pressure on your pass game.
“They are a good team and have some good players and at the end of the day we weren’t able to execute enough. We had some timely mistakes on our part and we shot ourselves in the foot but in the end we weren’t good enough up front offensively.”
It started off bad for the Tigers as Westgate opened the gate with a kickoff return for a touchdown.
That score alone would have been enough for the win but Westgate (2-4) added two more touchdowns, one in the second quarter and one in the fourth quarter, and SMSH wasn’t able to counter those scores.
“I think that we just need a break or two to go our way,” Kreamer said. “We had low numbers and we have been fighting the injury bug which all comes into play and it’s even more tough when you start with low numbers and more guys get hurt.”
It doesn’t get any easier for the Tigers as they play host to undefeated Jeanerette on Friday.
Jeanerette comes into the game having scored 40 or more points in five of their six games and having scored more than 50 points in three games, including putting 62 on West St. Mary Friday night.
“We know they are good and we are going to have to come out and play our best game to give us a chance,” Kreamer said.
