Breaux Bridge – A 49-year-old Breaux Bridge man was arrested recently on attempted murder charges following an altercation on the morning of Sept. 29.
St. Martin Parish Sheriff Becket Breaux said that at about 6:30 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 29, deputies with the Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call in the 1000 block of Benoit Road in Breaux Bridge regarding a man lying unresponsive in a driveway.
Deputies found the victim had suffered an apparent gunshot wound.
Following an initial investigation, Deputies with the St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office determined that a fight had taken place at the residence between the victim and a family member, identified as Gilbert Helaire Jr., 49, of Breaux Bridge.
Helaire was initially detained at a local hospital, where he received medical treatment for non-lifethreatening injuries as a result of the altercation.

Charges
At the culmination of the investigation, a warrant of arrest was obtained, and Gilbert Helaire Jr., was arrested and charged with the following: • LA. R.S. 14:27/14:30.1-Attempted Second-Degree Murder.
Following his arrest, he was booked into the St. Martin Parish Correctional Center on the above charges. His bond was set at $100,000.
