September 17, 1975

Acting at the request of local farmers. the St Martin Police Jury adopted resolution requesting Gov. Edwin Eduds to seek a federal disaster declaration for the parish as a result of crop damages suffered in recent months.

Newly elected officers of the Catahoula 5th-6th 4-H Club included Todd Louviere, president; Jody Guidry, vice president: Tina Albert, secretary treasurer: Lisa Poche, reporter; and Jackie Boudreaux and Elmer Guidry, pledge leaders.

The Board of Advisors for the Outstanding Young Men of America Awards Program announced that five parish residents have been selected for inclusion in the 1975 edition of “Outstanding Young Men of America”. They were Earl “Sonny” Hollier Jr. of Parks: Marshall Angelle of Arnaudville; and Hubert Hebert. Marcel *Butch Hebert and Robert Romero, all of Breaux Bridge.

Chairmen of the homecoming activities at St. Martinville Senior High School announced the members of the 1975 Homecoming Court. They included: Senior Maids: Kim Nassans, Myra Doucet and Bridget Dupuis; Junior Maids: Renee Boudreaux, Alicia Bienvenu and Darlena Charles. Sophomore Maids: Brenda Capritto, Margaret Batiste and Susan Jones.

September 2, 1985

St. Martin Association of Educators president Jane Crews announced the new officer for the teachers’ organization. In addition to Crews as president, other officers elected were Laura Turpeau, vice-president; Leatha Jones, secretary; and Juanita Decquir, treasurer. for the 1985-86 school year. Elected as officers of the Student Council at Mercy High School for the 1985-86 school year were Peggy Bienvenu, president; Patricia Hebert, vice president; Christy LeBlanc, secretary; and Claire Bienvenu, treasurer.

Electrical energy use in St. Martinville took a big jump during the September billing period, reaching a record level of 5.709.859 KWH. The September usage was almost 1.5 million KWH higher than the August consumption and eclipsed the old single month record of 5,453,000 KWH reported in September 1982.

The Louisiana State Police began the active enforcement of the new auto insurance law. The new law sets a minimum amount of coverage required on vehicles driven in Louisiana and required that proof of that coverage be carried in the vehicle at all times.

September 27, 2000

The 31-year-old Gary Memorial Hospital in Breaux Bridge formed a “joint venture” with a Lafayette facility and was renamed “St. Martin Hospital.” Administrator Burton Dupuis said the new name and affiliation with the Lafayette General Medical Center would lend more credibility to the 30-bed hospital.

Coeds selected by the St. Martinville Sr. High Tiger football team as maids on the 2000 homecoming court were seniors Shannon Gordon, Merylon Ledet, Albertina Mitchell and Nicole Poirier; juniors Heidi Poché, Hailey Poché, and Megan Berard; sophomores Ashley Louviere, Jill Theriot and Leryn LeBlanc, and freshman Jancie Bienvenu and Brittney Berard.

Work began on the reconstruction of the running track at the Cecilia High School athletic complex. Camel Contractors of Lafayette has been awarded a $168,000 contract to replace the old surface and enlarge the track from its present 380 meters to a regulation 400 meters.

Dianna Courville, president of the American Legion Auxiliary, Thibodeaux-Pellerin Unit 133 in Breaux Bridge, was honored at a reception and luncheon as Louisiana’s Department Auxiliary Woman of the Year announced during the National Convention held in Milwaukee, Wis.

Breigh Anna LeBlanc was recently crowned 2015 Miss Atchafalaya Basin Festival Queen.

Winners in the Jambalaya Cookoff/Crawfish Derby held at Parc de Pont Breaux along the Bayou Teche included Hebert’s Garage, Myles and Josh Hebert, overall winner; Blue Thunder, Nathan Thornton Jr. and Nathan Thornton III, wild game rrs place; and meat rrs place and people’s choice; Scotty and Randy Champagne.

The West Nile virus was detected in St. Martin Parish as one resident in Henderson was diagnosed with the disease. The virus was also detected in chickens in Henderson and Breaux Bridge and in a test pool in Cecilia.
