Baja St. Martin

Lots going on in the Belle River Community Center on Hwy. 70 in Belle River. Following a planning session with interested people and a week of classes for practice, it is now set. Chair Yoga will take place in the Center every Tuesday at 5:45 p.m. and every Wednesday at 10 a.m. Anyone can come to either class but the one on Tuesday was created especially to accommodate people who worked and could not get away from a job during the day. The Wednesday class is for everyone else. You can attend either class or both, depending on your schedule.

I could not have managed to organize all this without the help of Dee Hymel who has been an absolute jewel, finding things, making flyers and all others. And the classes are fun. So far we have 20 people signed up. I wouldn’t dream of naming names but most of the people who attend are in their 70s. A couple of us in our 80s. Sometimes one can’t come to one class but makes the other. We all have other obligations, but so far it’s been great. During the first class (my first) as I followed the DVD lady’s directions, I could hear things popping and snapping in my shoulders. Not painful. By the third class my joints were pretty quiet and I’ll tell you, now when I walk with my dog, I am constantly conscious of standing straight and sitting without hunching over.

If you’re over this way, stop in on Tuesday and/or Wednesday and join us.

And we’re having Bingo for Seniors the first and third Tuesdays of each month from 10 a.m. to noon led now by Deborah Gaspard with help from lots of people attending. I think people were a bit unsure of what to expect after we had to cancel the games for a few weeks but the word is out now that things will continue.

We have not had a drop of rain here in nearly two weeks. My grass is fading to light green and getting a bit crunchy. It is cooler, which is great.

The Belle River landing is pretty quiet lately. Hardly any boats, sports or fishermen. A few dumpster divers now and then. I am so relieved that there are no stray animals there anymore. I don’t know why but I’m so glad not to see poor, pitiful hungry critters scrounging for food.

A friend recently left me some books and the one I’ve started is The Romanov Sisters, about the Russian ruling family of Nicholas and Alexandra Romanov and their 5 children. Four daughters and one son who had hemophilia. You probably know a lot more about this time than I do, but in the late l800’s and early l900’s, maybe later, it was really important for a son to be born to carry on the family name and to become the next ruler. I haven’t finished the book yet, but I do know that the Romanov family, all of them were shot and killed. And that in desperation to help their son get well, the parents fell under the power of Grigory Rasputin. I think I’ve heard, read that one of the Romanov girls, Anastasia, was reputed to have survived somehow, but I don’t think that is true.

Anyway, the book is pretty interesting even though the Russian names are impossible plus everyone had multiple nicknames so it’s hard to keep track of who’s who.

I’m looking out my window at an empty Hummingbird feeder. Forgive me Mr. Huet. I don’t know if I have that many birds or the feeder has a leak. Probably the latter. I’ll keep you up to date on the Yoga classes. Suffice it to say, they are fun and I think helping my old joints and bones!
