50 Years Ago

September 17, 1975

Project BUILD, a bilingual, bicultural education program was implemented in 18 classrooms in St. Martin Parish Schools. “BUILD” is an acronym for Building Unity Involving Language Diversity.

The City of Breaux Bridge was among the winners in the 1974 Louisiana Municipal Association (LMA) Achievement Awards contest when results were announced at the annual convention in Monroe. Awards were presented to Breaux Bridge Mavor Fred Mills and City Councilmen Gavle Blanchard, Vernon Sukit Blanchard, Johnny Raymond, Vance Theriot and Russell “Shorty” Huval.

Students enrolled in home economics at St. Martinville Jr. High School were involved in a nationwide field test of two career exploration programs - “Exploring Careers in Fabrics” and “Exploring Careers in Living Environments”. The purpose of field testing was to help develop, design and revise the curriculums to better meet educational needs.

Grocery prices included: 1lb. Community Coffee - 99¢; Chicken of the Sea Tuna - 49¢; Shurfresh Brown and Serve Rolls or Hamburger or Hot Dog buns - 3/$1.09; and lean Ground Beef - 79¢/ lb.

September 18, 1985

Cecilia High Speech Squad officers for the 1985-86 year were Byron Duncan, president; Spencer Arnaud, vice president; Charee LeBlanc, secretary; and Ritchie Duplechin, treasurer.

Beta Rho chapter of Beta Sigma Phi officers for 1985. were Louella Champagne, president; Bobbie Theriot, vice president; Gersie Bienvenu, recording secretary; Lynn Bienvenu, treasurer; Karen Beyt, corresponding secretary; Peggy Sonnier, extension officer; and Hattie Maraist, sponsor.

Cecilia High School lunchroom staff members won first place in competition at the Louisiana School Food Service Association convention held in Shreveport. Fifteen schools throughout the state participated. Cecilia staff were Delta Dauphine, Angelin Calais, Genevieve Patin, Bessie LeBlanc, manager; Eula Roberts and Verna Angelle.

St. Martin Parish 4-H leaders attending the Louisiana 4-H Leaders Conference held at Camp Grant Walker were Sim Courville, Catahoula Elementary; Suzie Trahan, Breaux Bridge Elementary; Robert Richard, 4-H County Agent; and Leonard Eisenstein, St. Martinville High.

September 20, 2000

Crystal Poché was crowned St. Martinville Kiwanis Club Pepper Festival Queen. Jennifer LeBlanc was 1st alternate and Lacey Delahoussaye, 2nd alternate.

St. Martin Parish horsemen who participated in the Southern Regional 4-H Horse Show in Raleigh, N.C. were Lauren Stoute, Kasey Troglen, Brittany Thibodeaux and Kristina Taylor. Stoute placed 9th with her individual horse demonstration “Horses and Safety - A Winning Combination” while Thibodeaux and Taylor placed 8th with their team demonstration “Horses and Microchips A Winning Combination”.

Construction of the long-awaited Bayou Teche bridge between St. Martinville and Parks finally began under a $2.8 million contract awarded by the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development to F. Miller & Son of Lake Charles. The swing-span bridge and approaches will link Main Hwy./La. 31 with Resweber Hwy./La. 347 about one-half mile north of the old railroad bridge at St. John.

The Richard Champagne American Legion Auxiliary Unit 289 Parks officers were Janet Lasseigne, president; Erin Durio vice-president and historian; Bernice Chapman, parliamentarian; Dot Jeansonne, chaplain and executive committee; Betty Allemand, executive committee; Judy Horn, sergeant-at-arms; Gloria Degeyter and Jamie Degeyter, color bearers; Roxanne Roy, secretary; Theresa Latiolais, treasurer, and Mary Lou Frederick, executive committee.

The Junior Auxiliary of the Richard Champagne American Legion Unit 289 Parks newly elected officers were Julia Horn, president; Sydney Durio, vice-president; Lindsey Durio, chaplain; Lexi Boyer, historian; Abbie Gauthier, secretary; Lylah Burdin sergeant-at-arms; and Alexis and Emily Babineaux, color bearers.
