Small and medium-scale farmers looking to deepen their skills in organic production are invited to attend the Advanced Organic Farming Workshop on Sept. 27 at LSU.

The event will be led by Daniel Parson, of Oxford College Farm at Emory University, who brings over 25 years of farming and teaching experience focused on sustainable horticultural practices.

Sponsored by the LSU AgCenter’s Grow Louisiana Beginning Farmer Training Program and the Louisiana Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Professional Development Program, this workshop is designed for producers already familiar with the basics of organic farming and seeking more advanced insights.

Topics will include:

• A deep dive on growing tomatoes, squash, and lettuce

• Weed management strategies

• Raising strong transplants

• Direct seeding techniques “This training aims to provide deeper understandings of topics that affect all growers,” said Isabella Frank, program director. “Weed management, establishing new crops and high-maintenance crops like tomatoes and squash are challenges that many southern growers, especially those prioritizing sustainable and organic methods, struggle with.”

The workshop is geared toward growers who sell direct-toconsumer, particularly those cultivating horticultural crops like vegetables and cut flowers.

The workshop will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Room 132 of Julian C. Miller Hall on LSU’s main campus in Baton Rouge. Checkin begins at 8:30 a.m. Lunch will be provided, but drinks will not, so participants are encouraged to bring their own water or other beverages.

Registration is $15 and can be completed online at: https:// lsuagcenter.regfox.com/ advanced-organic-farming- workshop.
