SM Chambers’ Downtown Innovation wins first place award at LMA meet

St Martinville - A groundbreaking project blending art and economics has claimed first place in a prestigious regional competition through Louisiana Municipal Association (LMA), shining a spotlight on the vibrant innovation thriving in the heart of downtown.

The project, titled “Art on Fire”, was developed by a team of local artists, economists, and community organizers. It captured the Community Achievement Award for Outstanding Community Improvement in Community Development at the LMA Annual Conference, a statewide member organization that advocates for all 303 municipalities and 2 parishes to strengthen community development; because we all call a village, town, or city “home”.

Located in the downtown core, the project features a series of public art installations on fire hydrants that depict our culture and heritage and is a complete rehab and service project to each hydrant.

Community leaders praised the project for its originality, community involvement, and real-world impact.

The team behind the project includes the St. Martinville Chamber of Commerce, the St. Martin Parish Government, the St. Martin Parish Fire District and the City of St. Martinville who worked closely with local residents and businesses throughout the design and implementation process. Their collaborative approach helped ensure that the installations reflect the history and legacies of the community.

“We’re thrilled to see our work resonate with so many people,” said Mary Desormeaux, Chamber President. “This award affirms that creative, communitycentered approaches to economic issues are not only possible—they’re powerful.”

Forty-four hydrants were cleaned and primed. Twenty-four were selected to be painted by local artists and the remaining 20 were painted yellow.
