50 Years Ago

September 10, 1975

Although chances of the parish’s two sugar mills suffering from naural gas cutbacks were not very likely, St. Martin Coop and Breaux Bridge Coop installed systems that allowed them to run on an alternate fuel for several days making use of No. 2 diesel fuel.

Receiving Outstanding Camper Awards while attending 4-H Camp Grant Walker near Alexandria were Peter Bernard, Breaux Bridge Jr. High; and Liz Barras, Gwen Fruge and Norbert Barras, all of Cecilia Jr. High.

Grocery prices included Duncan Hines Cake Mix - 69¢; 5 lbs. Domino Sugar - $1.49; 11 oz. Coffee Mate - 79¢; Bryan sliced Bologna - 89¢; and Chuck Steak - 98¢/lb.

Newly installed officers of the St. Martinville Knights of Columbus included Howard Louviere, grand knight; Ivy Perioux, deputy grand knight; Clifford Durand, lecturer: John Blanchard, financial secretary: Norris Byron, treasurer; Olden Granger, warden; Clarence Duchamp, chancellor; Clifford Mouton, recorder; Clifton Mouton, inside guard; Alden Lasseigne, advocate; Naram Touchet, outside guard; and Robert Savoy, program director.

Parish 4-H students who attended the National Citizenship Shortcourse Conference in Washington D.C. were Cathy Coles, Breaux Bridge Sr. High; Renee Doiron, and Lynette LeDoux, Mercy High; and Kevin Calais, Cecilia Sr. High.

40 Years Ago

September 11, 1985

Enrollment in St. Martin Parish public schools for the 1985-86 session was down slightly from the previous year, according to figures compiled by the school board. Total enrollment for the current year was 9,101, a decrease of 46 students from the September 1984 count of 9,147 students.

Groundbreaking ceremonies were held marking the start of construction of a parish livestock exhibition facility at Breaux Bridge High School. The $80,000 cost of the 21,000 sq. ft. facility was provided by the state.

James Potier, grand knight of the St. John Council 53, Knights of Peter Claver in Parks received the highest award given by the Knights of Peter Claver at the KPC annual convention in Louisville, Ky. Potier was awarded the St. Peter Claver Gold Medal Award of Merit for meritorious service by the National Council.

The John B. McCoy Memorial Scholarships sponsored by the Nu Theta Lambda chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity were awarded to Amanda Pete and Monique Pearce.

25 Years Ago

September 13, 2000

The Maids, a St. Martin Parish U8 girls softball team, placed second in the USSSA state championship tournament held in Lake Charles. The Maids also placed first in the Parc Hardy Memorial Day Classic and the Ponytail Classic USSSA NIT. Members were Cindy Robin, Aundrea Hargroder, Amber Castille, Shea Blanchard, Sara Hollier, Matelyn Landry, Devan Green, Caitlyn Twite, Jena Marks, Kae Angelle, Jayce Palomorez, Michelle Melancon, Ashley Taylor and coaches and Dean Blanchard, John Hargroder and Kim Angelle.

The St. Martinville City Council voted to assess owners of pit bulls $100 for permits and were subject to strict housing guidelines for the dogs.

The 2015-16 Breaux Bridge High dance team included Lindsey Roberts, Monique Green, Kelcie Louviere, Lacie Latiolais, Brooke Romero, Laney Guidry and Tylynn Richard.

Boosting Cecilia Bulldog athletic teams during the 2015-16 session were Hannah Gautreaux, Jailee Menard, Madison Dupuis, Kelsea Boutin, Laren Florence, Carli Calais, Amaya Johnson, EJ Blanchard and Brianna McGee (co-captains), Alyssa Thibodeaux, Jordan Serrette. Morgan Melancon, Kiley Gordon, Cayli Noel, MaKayla Babb, Vanessa Noel, Ahni Calais, Olivia Pratt and Christan Robicheaux.

Selected to the 2015-16 cheer squad at St. Martinville Sr. High were Asia Daspit, Rebecca Renard, Morgan Theriot, Kelsey Doiron, Blake Duplechain, Farren Narcisse (co-captain), Kelly Hulin (captain) Carlee Hotard, Tayler Baudoin, Jaelin Breaux, Brooke Broussard, Alexis Latiolais, Somer Berthelot, Layla Lagrange, Madison Prunty and Dominique Solomon.

Members of the 2015-16 cheer squad at Breaux Bridge High School included Krystie LeBlanc, Caitlyn Wilson, Rynella Girouard, Elizabeth Chauffe, Rieli Trahan, MacKenzie Champagne, Emily Guidry, Kaitlyn Theriot, Reagan Boudreaux, Kaitlyn Guidry, Amanda Laperouse, Ana Angelle, Gracie Courville, Haley Chaudoin and Hattie Gros.
