Baja St. Martin

I want to mention that I received the nicest voicemail message on my phone last week from a gentleman in Cecilia. I was going to say his name but realized I hadn’t asked permission to do that so I’ll just relate some of our conversation. He said he reads my Baja column every week and wanted to tell me that he, too, was a Hummingbird fan and that the Hummers were out and about now. He told me he was buying a new Hummer feeder that had holes for several birds. I hope he tells me how it works because I tried once, and told him, that I once put out two feeders a little way apart and the hummers got pretty angry. They didn’t seem to mind more than one colleague using the same feeder but they didn’t want two. Not sure why. Something to do with territory I guess. Anyway, the man and I had a nice chat and I was really flattered that he read my column. I may never meet this man in person but it was really nice talking to him. And just so you know, Mr. H., I have filled my hummingbird feeder and am waiting patiently for some hummers. I sometimes get an email from a woman who reads the column and once lived in St. Martinville but is elsewhere now. She chats a bit about family . I really love it when someone contacts me like this. Now, don’t get me wrong, I don’t think I want dozens of notes every week, but it’s really nice to “meet” other people.

It is back to the heat again and no rain here. The levee is freshly mowed at least on the road side. I haven’t been on the other side for awhile because it’s too hot. My black dog doesn’t do well in the full sun either. So we sit at the boat landing under the pavilion roof. Nobody much there except a few sport fishermen and a dumpster diver or two.

Bingo for Seniors will begin once again on Tuesday, Sept. 2 at 10am until noon as before. The new Bingo “boss”, so to speak, is Debra Gaspard, a local Belle River woman whom I’m told used to be a school bus driver for Assumption Parish. She is a volunteer as were the previous hosts and I’m so happy the games will continue. They provide a lot of enjoyment for a lot of people.

Chair Yoga classes will begin on Tuesday, Sept. 9 at 5:45 pm in the Belle River Community Center. This class is aimed at those ladies who work during the day and can’t attend the daytime sessions which are on Wednesday and Friday, Sept. 10 and 12, Chair Yoga classes will be held at 10:00am for everyone else. Anyone can attend any class, but these are the ones the group decided upon to start with. I’m looking forward to it. This hot weather has kept me fairly immobile—I just don’t get out and walk much so my back pops and snaps when I move around. I need the exercise - badly!

I really don’t know why, because there is nothing edible out there, but just recently two cats have been traversing my yard. One looked like a pile of white paper until it moved and dashed to the south into a neighbor’s yard. The other is black and it ran first south when chased by my dog, then a while later came racing across the yard in the other direction to another neighbor’s yard. Perhaps because the hot weather has kept my dog inside a lot, these two cats feel safe to wander about. I just hope they can run fast! My cat and dog get along well but the dog isn’t so nice to strange felines.
