– Former Cecilia High School standout receiver and defensive back Brent Gordon Jr. is ready to make a splash for the UL-Lafayette football team.

Ragin’ Cajuns head football coach Michael Desormeaux singled Gordon out for praise following the team’s first intrasquad scrimmage on Monday.

Desormeaux said that Gordon, who will be a defensive back in Lafayette, is among the true freshmen on the roster who are most ready for playing time.

“Brent Gordon is the freshman right now that I would say has really kind of stood out,” Desormeaux said. “Brent Gordon is what we thought he was, what he was in high school.

“He’s going to fit in that mix somewhere. That kid will play this year. He’s physical, he’s smart, he’s tough, and he does things the way they’re supposed to be done.”

Redshirt senior safety Tyree Skipper, who led the team in interceptions a year ago, also took note of Gordon’s potential. Skipper is expected to lead a group of experienced and inexperienced secondary players this year.

“A freshman that’s catching my eye on defense is Brent Gordon,” Skipper said. “They got him at star, kinda cornerbackish. We got a lot of young guys who are talented but Brent caught my eye.”

Gordon was a key player on both offense and defense as Cecilia won the Division II Non-Select state championship, the first for the school since 1994. The Bulldogs also reached the finals in 2023.

Gordon, 5-foot-11 and 180 pounds, led Cecilia with 119 total tackles, four interceptions and eight pass breakups as a senior. He is the school’s alltime leading tackler with 400 for his career and is second in school history with 15 interceptions.
