An Article of Faith

Psalm 2 is an incredible chapter in scripture that reads like a four act play where curtains rise and fall and the plot only thickens. The twelve verses are separated into four stanzas with the first and last taking place on Earth with King David on center stage. Scenes two and three take place in heaven with God himself and Jesus in the spotlight, respectively. Lights up and let the curtain rise.

The first scene begins with King David asking why the rulers and leaders of the world are in a rage of rebellion and conspiring together to do evil. He then explains that this rebellion and scheming is against none other than God himself and his son Jesus! Their war cry defiantly declares that they will break all of God’s constraints, laws, and authority. The battle lines are drawn over who will “rule” the world.

Scene two opens in heaven where God himself is looking down on the rebellion taking place on Earth. God is not walking around heaven in a panic. No, God is not fretting over their threats by any means, he’s literally laughing! However, the laughter soon ends, and his anger comes forth as he declares that his son, Jesus, is the rightful ruler and he warns them sternly of the consequences of their rebellion in no uncertain terms.

Scene three also takes place in heaven but now the spotlight is on the chosen king Jesus. The king declares that his conquest is to put down all the evil rebellion as he must rule them with “a rod of iron” and many he will have to shatter like pieces of pottery. He assures the tyrants that if this rebellion continues, destruction will be their lot.

As the curtain falls and reopens, we are now back on planet Earth and King David is giving a dire warning. He is also pleading with the rebellious leaders to bow down and stop the rebellion before it is too late. He urges them to drop their weapons and instead “kiss the Son”, the rightful king who died for the sins of their rebellion. He concludes with beautiful words of encouragement for those who have chosen to follow the king and join the fight against this tyranny. He declares, “Blessed are all who have chosen to take refuge in him.”

Psalm Two reads like the headlines of today’s news as God and his Word are seen as old fashioned at best and hate speech at worst. The global leaders are conspiring this very minute to control the world politically, economically and culturally in defiance against the Lord God. I have written a short book on this psalm entitled: Why Do the Nations Rage? The War Against God. Copies are free if you would like one. Email mikegfuselier@ gmail.com. St.
