The heat has abated a little but still is oppressive in the mid afternoon. Rain is forecast nearly every day but not a drop here.
I’m not seeing much activity in Belle River as far as crabbing is concerned. Some of the floats that were out last week are now gone so I guess the crabbing wasn’t very productive.
At the Belle River landing the main activity seems to be sport fishing and from what I can overhear, that isn’t great either. Just that time of the year I guess when everything is sort of stagnant.
School is ready to start. Stephensville Elementary and Pierre Part Elementary have more and more vehicles parked in the lots as teachers get ready for the big day.
In Pierre Part, the town seems ready if not happy that the 7th and 8th graders will be going to classes in Napoleonville rather than staying in Pierre Part. I personally am anxious to see how that works out. The pessimist in me fears there will be problems particularly with transportation. The optimist hopes everything will work out smoothly.
My Purple Martins are gone. The babies have fledged and all is quiet. I miss the early morning and evening chatter.
The structure I’ve mentioned on Hwy 70 just before Stephensville is now sporting siding— maybe the vinyl type. The place seems bigger than ever. Closer to me, just before the Belle River boat landing entrance, a mobile home seems now occupied. As I passed one day recently, two people were standing in the yard and both waved when I passed. It appears to be a residence not just a camp.
For sure the owner has gone to some trouble and expense, with the trailer on a large, concrete slab and a mailbox now by the road.
As I sit typing, I just heard the rumble of thunder but it must not be imminent since the sun is still shining.
As I came home from Bingo today, I had to slow for some police vehicles with lights flashing in front of a house on Hwy. 70. A friend feared an accident had involved me since I had just passed the place, but it turned out to be a just happened crash where a pick-up truck ran into the side of the mail truck. I didn’t see either vehicle but the friend told me the mail vehicle was pretty smashed. Neither of us had any idea who or if anyone was hurt. I guess that explains why I haven’t gotten any mail yet today. Lest that sound unfeeling, I do hope nobody got hurt, but my friend said the mail truck was really smashed on the drivers side.
This probably won’t be of interest to you, but you are still invited to participate in the Chair Yoga classes which will be taking place in the Belle River Community Center soon. We’re having a planning get together on Sat., August 16 to decide how often to meet, which days, times, et al. If you’re around the area come join us. I’m really looking forward to the classes. With this heat, I have not been walking on the levee at all and pretty much not getting any exercise. I take the dog to the boat landing so at least she can run around a s little but all I do is sit under the pavilion roof and work cryptoquizzes and crosswords. Good mind exercise but doesn’t do much for the body.
Several people came to the Assumption Parish police jury meeting recently and told about a Beat the Heat project. So far it’s just on paper so I’m curious what they will actually do about the heat, which one of them said is going to happen more often. Extreme heat events, they said, are going to be more and more common.
