Among the high yield winners at the parish Sugar Cane Field Day were: Up to to 99 Acres: Elmore Lasseigne Estate, 1st, 30.9 tons on 74.9 acres; and Leonce Boudreaux Jr., 2nd, 28.1 tons on 75.5 acres; 100 to 199.9 acres: Adam and Bernard Laviolette, 1st, 31 tons per acre on 159.5 acres; Russell Judice, 2nd, 28.2 tons on 166.3 acres; and Howard Duplantis, 3rd, 27.6 tons on 152.7 acres. 200 to 499.9 acres: Louis and Claude Comb, 1st, 29.5 tons on 364.1 acres; Bernard Brothers, 2nd, 28.7 acres on 443.3 acres; and Laperouse Brothers, 3rd, 28.3 tons on 337.3 acres.
Johnny Devillier was appointed head football coach at Cecilia Senior High.
Winners in the St. Martin Parish Tennis Tournament included Jeff deBlanc and Louis Gary, 1st doubles; Larry Roy and Paul Olivier, 2nd doubles: and Chuck Duchamp and Jeff Olivier, 3rd, doubles; and Danny Guidry, 1st, singles; Louis Gary, 2nd singles; and Chuck Duchamp, 3rd singles.
40 Years Ago August 7, 1985
One of St. Martin Parish’s historic landmarks, variously known as the Duchamp House, the Ozenne House, the Fuselier House, the Sandoz Home and Belle Cherie, located on a knoll overlooking Bayou Tortue, between St. Martinville and Broussard, burned to the ground.
St. Martinville city officials took part in the groundbreaking for the new St. Martinville city hall.
The St. Martinville City Council went on record as opposing the landfill site proposed by Waste Management of Acadiana, to be located southwest of the city along LA 92 (the Cade Rd.).
Parish sugarcane farmers recognized as high yield winners for their 1984 sugar crops at the annual St. Martin Parish Sugarcane Field Day were Chris Latiolais of Parks, overall high yield winner with 6.695 pounds of sugar per acre; Roy Latiolais of St. Martinville, Ronnie Roberts of Breaux Bridge, Bernard Laviolette and Adam Laviolette Jr. of St. Martinville, and Raymond Boudreaux of St. Martinville. These farmers all produced at least 20% above the parish average of 4,514 pounds per acre.

Lake Henderson was drained until at least January to combat the aquatic menace, hydrilla. The water dropped slowly and some parts of the lake’s bottom were actually was drying up.
Ronald Theriot, a St. Martinville native, was promoted to major and head of the State Police Region Ill which covers 42 of the state’s 64 parishes.
A presentation of billet planting and wholestalk planting of sugar15 cane were the highlight of the field tour during the annual St. Martin Sugarcane Field Day. The whole stalk remained the recommended method of planting for maximum yield.

St. Martinville’s Magnolia Park disc golf course was on schedule for an anticipated opening in September or October. Crews began drilling the holes and setting posts for the goal baskets and course signs.
Sylvia Segura Bienvenu, a longtime St. Martin Parish teacher and resident of St. Martinville, was inducted as a Living Legend, a program sponsored by the Acadian Museum of Erath to honor an individual who has helped shape and define Cajun culture.
Breaux Bridge’s Matthew LeBlanc, an11-yearold dirt bike racer, won a title at the largest amateur motocross race in the world, the 34th Annual Rocky Mountain ATV/MC AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship presented by AMSOIL at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch in Hurricane Mills, TN.
