Reacting somewhat angrily to a decision by the St. Martinville City Council to build a new water municipal water treatment plant completely independent of the jury-owned water plant in the parish industrial park, the St. Martin Police Jury voted to double the price of water it was presently selling to the city. By a vote of 4-2, the jury decided to up the rate from 30¢ per thousand gallons to 60¢. At the same time, they agreed to lower the minimum amount of water that the city must purchase from 600,000 gallons per day down to 300,000 gallons..
The St. Martin Police Jury has once again expressed concerned interest in the State Highway Department plans to build a limited access loop for Interstate 10 around Lafayette. Jurors indicated that they felt the proposed plan did little to serve the needs of St. Martin Parish.
Mayer Mitchell, chairman of the Mitchell Company, announced that construction would soon commence on Evangeline Village Shopping Center in St. Martinville. The site of the creative new shopping center on South Main Street, when completed, would provide over 42,000 square feet of leaseable space with customer parking for over 250 automobiles.
Morrison Engineers & Construction Co.of New Roads, was awarded a $28,720 contract for the construction of a boat ramp on the landside borrow pit of the West Atchafalaya Basin Protection Levee at Henderson.

Following years of warnings, the St. Martin Police Jury closed down the last of the garbage dumps it operated for rural residents. Public dumps scheduled to be closed include the Catahoula dump on the Bayou Mercier Road and the Coteau Holmes dump on the Bayou Portage Road. Other jury-operated dumps near Breaux Bridge and Cecilia were shut down earlier during the year.
Breaux Bridge’s Troy Arceneaux claimed a gold medal in the decatholon competition of the National Junior Olympics in Seattle, Washington.
St. Martinville youngsters who competed at the Hershey Track Meet state finals at USL in Lafayette included, Wendy Bienvenu and Jake Delhomme of Breaux Bridge; and Scott Bienvenu, Ben Landry, Blake Douet and Dax Douet, all of St. Martinville. The local contingent was sponsored by the St. Martinville Jaycees.
Parks K. C. Officers of the St. Joseph Knights of Columbus Council in Parks installed for the 1985-86 year were, Philip Doiron, grand knight; Paul Maraist, deputy grand knight; Melvin Douet, financial secretary; Thomas Guidry, recorder; J.J. Bernis, warden; Fr. Whitney LeBlanc, chaplain; Neal Melancon, lecturer; Harris Guidry, Mike Huval and Bud Roy, trustees; Alfred Potier, advocate; Wilson Theriot, inside guard; Freddie Mills, chancellor; James Theriot, treasurer; and Dean Babineaux, outside guard.
Elected officers of the Parks Columbian Squires were Adam Champagne, chief squire; Ryan Hebert, deputy chief squire; Bobby Sutton, bursar; Tahanee Thibodeaux, marshal; Corey Melancon, sentry; and Robert Hollier, notary.

St. Joseph Knights of Columbus of Parks recently installated new officers including Lonnie LaCombe, treasurer; Melvin Douet, grand knight; Ray Boudreaux, deputy grand knight; Tommy Guidry, financial secretary; Remy Boudreaux, recorder; Ben Boudreaux, warden; Wade Dupuis, district deputy; Ben Potier, lecturer; Alfred Potier, trustee; Wilson Theriot, advocate; Don Fontenot, state advocate; and Norman Usie, chancellor.
In a move that angered parish offi cials who said they were not consulted beforehand, two of the three health units in St. Martin Parish, St. Martinville and Cecilia were being shut down within 60 days.
The top vve students in the eighth grade class at Catahoula Elementary were Derek Latiolais, valedictorian; Craig Vicknair, salutatorian; and Jennifa Guilbeau, Minnie Jermaine Smith and Lindy Boggs.

Members of the Cecilia FFA and Breaux Bridge FFA chapters attending FFA Leadership Camp were Victorian Cooke and Jimmy Fallen and Tim Chiasson, advisor of Breaux Bridge High; and Evan Rodriguez, Gavin Abshire, Michael Clause, Tyler Richard and John Cramer, advisor, Cecilia High School.
Gracie Courville, a student at St. Bernard School, was the recipient of the Warren and Mavis A. Finley Scholarship awarded to the student who exhibited high academic standards and is involved in community service.
