Tropical system dumps rain throughout St. Martin Parish
HIGH WATER – A pickup truck is completely obscured by the water it is driving through along Main Street in St. Martinville on Thursday afternoon as a disorganized tropical system dumps a few inches of rain on the city. The system, which started along the Atlantic coast of Florida before moving across the panhandle and into the Gulf, dropped up to 10 inches of rain in some parts of Acadiana, according to the National Weather Service. St. Martinville received about 2.29 inches of rain on Thursday alone, and the Atchafalaya Basin saw much of the heaviest rainfall. (Chris Landry)

– Some parts of St. Martin Parish were hit by more than 4 inches of rain Thursday afternoon as a disorganized tropical system moved ashore from the Gulf.

Belle River in Assumption Parish, was hit by 9 inches of rain near Stephensville in Lower St. Martin Parish, with the Raindrop app reporting 4.4 inches of rain in Morgan City, which shares its zip code with Stephensville. Pierre Part saw 6.4 inches of rain, according to Raindrop.

Donald Jones of the National Weather Service in Lake Charles said in a briefing that the heaviest rains on Thursday came in the Atchafalaya Basin. More rainfall came Friday and into Saturday as the system lingered.

St. Martinville saw 2.29 inches of rain on Thursday, with the heaviest showers coming around 4 p.m. Breaux Bridge measured in at 1.47 inches.

Jones said that most of Acadiana would receive 2-4 inches of rain over the three days but some areas could receive as much as 8-10 inches of rain. However, Friday and Saturday saw less rain than on Thursday and no big flooding issues were reported.

Another system was expected to follow by midweek this week, crossing the Florida Panhandle and moving into the Gulf and possibly into Louisiana.
