St. Martinville – Two Lafayette me were arrested for attempted murder in a case involving a man kidnapped in Lafayette Parish and transported to St. Martin Parish before being shot and stabbed multiple times, St. Martin Parish Sheriff Becket Breaux said on Monday.
At about 5 a.m. on July 16, deputies with St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office received a call from a passing motorist in the 1500 block of Prairie Highway regarding a man who appeared to be in distress, lying on the side of the road.
Investigators learned after arriving on the scene that the man had been kidnapped at gunpoint in Lafayette Parish and transported to St. Martin Parish, where he was shot, stabbed multiple times, and left on the side of the road.
Murder
Following further investigation, two suspects were identified and arrest warrants were issued for Kaleb Benoit, 20, of Lafayette, and Cameron Babineaux, 25, of Lafayette, on the following charges: * 14:27—Attempted Crime (1 count)
• 14:30—First Degree Murder (1 count) On July 18, Benoit turned himself in and was booked on the above charges at the St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office Correctional Center, where he is being held without bond.
As the investigation continued, Investigators learned that Babineaux was traveling to Texas, and with the assistance of the Texas Department of Public Safety, was apprehended on Friday evening, July 18, shortly before 6 p.m.
He is currently incarcerated in the Chambers County Correctional Facility on unrelated charges. He will be transported at a later date to be booked into the St. Martin Parish Correctional Center on the above charges.
The joint investigation with the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office remains ongoing.
