Rex Landry of the St. Martinville Lion’s Club presented the Lions’ Outstanding Citizen Award for 1975 to Andrew Daspit who was recognized during special banquet for his contributions to civic and religious projects in the community.
Bolstered with the confidence of the just approved municipal sales tax, the St. Martinville City Council voted to proceed with plans to construct a new water treatment facility which would be independent of the parish owned plant in the St. Martin Industrial Park.
The year long battle by some Bayou Benoit residents to keep the Atchafalaya Levee Board and U. S. Corps of Engineers from forcing them off their homesteads along the West Protection Levee in St. Martin Parish appeared headed for court after the passage of the July 15 “clear out”’ deadline.
The St Martinville National Guard unit was presented the coveted Eisenhower Trophy during special ceremonies at the local Armory. Receipt of the huge trophy marked the fourth time that Co B (Medical), 199th Support Battalion, 256th Infantry Brigade, had earned the award, the highest honor in the Louisiana Army National Guard.
Sr. Mary Anacletus, RSM, and Mrs. Larry Roy were selected as Outstanding Elementary Teachers of America for 1975 on the basis of their professional, personal and academic achievements. Both were teachers at Trinity Catholic Elementary in St. Martinville.
40 Years Ago July 24, 1985
Mauricia Ledet, a Breaux Bridge High School student was named a 1985 United States National Award winner in physical education by the United States Achievement Academy.
St. Martinville’s Douglas Bulliard birdied five of the last nine holes to win the rain-delayed 1985 Iberia Parish Golf Tournament by one stroke.
Parish youngsters who were selected to play on the Martin All-Star team in the 9-10 age group were, Brent Prade, Mikie Angelle, Dwayne Thomas, John Domingues, Brent Calais, Craig Gordon, Johnathan Robinson, Cory Latiolais, Jerome Demouchet, Jamie Calais, Donald Batiste, Joe Kaiser, Kyle Guidry, John Huval and Kenneth Houston. Coaches were Ken Guidry, Mike Rabeaux and Bobby Dartez.
Singing the country hit “Somebody Should Leave,” 14-year-old Cherie Angelle of St. Martin Parish walked away with the first place trophy at the Louisiana Farm Bureau Federation’s annual Talent Contest in New Orleans.

Grocery prices included Smoked Picnic Hams - 58¢ lb; Boneless Brisket - 89¢ lb; Large Bell Peppers 5 for $1; 5 lbs. Domino Sugar 2 for $3; 2 liter Coke 88¢.
Winners in the home garden category of the St. Martin Parish Cooperative Extension Service vegetable garden contest were John Landry, Parks, first place; Lawrence Theriot, Parks, second place; Dean Greig, St. Martinville, third place; Harold Webre, Parks fourth place; and Howard Broussard, Coteau Holmes, fifth place.
Heather Richard, a 2000 graduate from Breaux Bridge High School, received the University of Louisiana at Monroe Academic Achievement award.

Members of the Cecilia FFA and Breaux Bridge FFA chapters attending the area FFA Leadership Camp were BBHS delegation Victorian Cooke and Jimmy Fallen and Tim Chiasson, advisor of Breaux Bridge High and Evan Rodriguez, Gavin Abshire, Michael Clause, Tyler Richard and John Cramer, advisor, Cecilia High School.
Gracie Courville, a student at St. Bernard School, was the recipient of the Warren and Mavis A. Finley Scholarship awarded to the student who exhibited high academic standards and is involved in community service.
