50 Years Ago July 16, 1975

The capital outlay bill approved by the Louisiana Legislature included an $85,000 appropriation to help the City of St. Martinville repair damages to its electrical system incurred during a violent storm which struck the city on April 30.

The Breaux Bridge City Council took under advisement a reapportionment plan setting up five single-member districts for the next municipal election.

Dr. Forrest E. Henderson, State Veterinarian, announced that Anthrax (Charbon), an infectious disease of livestock, had been confirmed as the cause of death in cattle in the northern part of St. Landry Parish. The St. Martin Parish County Agent’s Office sent a letter to St. Martin Parish farmers urging vaccination of livestock.

Newly elected officers of the American Legion Dovic ‘Theriot Post 293 in Catahoula were Jim Landry, commander; Percy Bourque, 1st vice commander; Gabriel Latiolais, service officer; Ramie Latiolais, Americanism officer; Tommy Latiolais, membership chairman; Otto Frederick, chaplain; Essie Savoy, finance officer; and Johnny Frederick, adjutant.

40 Years Ago July 17, 1985

The Breaux Bridge City council cleared the way for the annexation of another 560 acres of property into the corporate limits. The area is located on the southeast edge of the city, extending from the present city limits at Hollier Road and Poydras Street out to the Clifton Angelle Road along La. 347. The area includes approximately 75 to 100 people.

Pony League (13-14) players from throughout the parish were selected to make up a St. Martin All-Star team to compete in the state Pony Tournament. Team members included, Rocky Guidry, Craig Roberts, Reggie Abraham, Ferguson Demouchet, Peter Hypolite, Heath Angelle, Wyman Dick, Ryan Theriot, Chris Guidry, Chad Guidry, Jared Fontenot and Jody Watkins. Coaches were Dale Theriot, Chester Guidry and Harris Theriot,

25 Years Ago July 20, 2000

The Chez Sidney Bandits boys 12-U softball team captured the state title in a tournament held at Pelican Park. Team members were Cole Blanchard, Justin Poche, Justin Couvillion, Charlie Theriot, Matt Broussard, Brogan Degetaire, Luke Aubrey, Seth Champagne, Beau Lasseigne, Rhushion Hebert, May Belaire, Kyle Champagne, Trent Hebert and coaches Andy Lasseigne, Clint Poche and Mark Hebert.

The BAYSI Tigers Colt team won the district championship. Team members were Andrew Arnaud, Ian LeBlanc, Cal Guidry, Matt Camacho, Zac Lancon, Trey LeBlanc, Mike John, Matt Berard, James Auguillard, Darren Noel, Jarod Haynes, Blaine Clark and Dustin Bellard. Coaches were Kyle Cormier, Ryan Fredrick, and Gabe Cormier.

Officers of the Thibodeaux-Pellerin Unit 133 Auxiliary of the American Legion in Breaux Bridge were Dianna Courville, president; Missy Courville, 1st vice president; Renay Lucie, 2nd vice president; Phyllis Albert, secretary; Dot Gauthier, treasurer; Emeline Guidry, chaplain; Annie Blanchard, sergeant-at-arms; Gloria Degeyter, historian; Jane Dupuis, parliamentarian; and Mercy Fruge and Earlene Sonnier, color bearers.

Installed officers of the Thibodeaux-Pellerin Post 133 American Legion in Breaux were Ames Cormier, commander; Jackie Segura, 1st vice commander; Harold Degeyter, 2nd vice commander; Eric Courville, adjutant; Kirk Barilleaux, sergeant-at-arms; John LeBlanc, chaplain; Douglas Albert and Lester Perio, color bearers; George Degeyter, historian; and Lin Berard, finance officer.

10 Years Ago July 15, 2015

Jacob Syon, 18, a student at St. Martinville Senior High, placed rrs in benchpress, benching 390 pounds at the U.S. Association of Powerlifting Summer Classic in Abbeville.

The City of Breaux Bridge received the “Water Conservation Award” at the Louisiana Rural Water Association’s 30th annual Training and Technical Conference in Lake Charles.
