Parks - The July meeting of the Parks Village Council was brief, with only a few items requiring official action.
Council members voted to approve the minutes from the June meeting and passed a resolution supporting the Teche-Vermilion Freshwater District’s efforts to have the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers clean up Bayou Teche. Additionally, the council approved a new 10-year agreement with SLEMCO to continue providing electricity to the village.
Mayor Kevin Kately provided updates on several ongoing projects. He reported a recent incident at the village boat dock, where someone illegally dumped a 55-gallon drum of oil during the night.
“Thankfully, the oil didn’t reach the bayou,” Kately said. “The Sheriff’s Department, Coast Guard, and Department of Environmental Quality responded quickly and were able to contain and clean up the spill.”

To prevent future incidents, the mayor said the village is looking into installing security cameras at the boat dock. He also mentioned efforts to obtain an excavator to assist with cleaning the area.
In other updates, Kately announced that bids are now being accepted for the construction of a new water well. He is also working with state officials to secure an additional $400,000 grant to help fund the project.
“Hopefully by next month, we’ll have the bids in and can begin moving forward,” he said.
The mayor also provided a status update on the installation of new water meters, which had been approved at a previous meeting.
“We’re currently waiting on installation,” said Kately. “The supplier is in the process of contracting out the installation work, and we hope it will begin soon.”
With no further business on the agenda, the meeting was adjourned. The next council meeting is scheduled for August.
