St. Martinville flushing water system after fixing breaks in water lines

St. Martinville – The City of St. Martinville’s Public Works Department is flushing its water system after fixing two major leaks in water lines in the city in the past week, both to clear the system of the water it had taken in from St. Martin Parish during the repair work and to ensure that any impurities or debris stirred up by the work are cleared out.

The state’s Department of Health also was taking samples of water as hydrants were flushed, according to Jonathan Vining, who oversees the city’s water system.

While the city checks the quality of water itself, the state also wanted to take samples of its own because of the break in the main 16-inch water line that occurred off of Aubrey Ozenne Road in the early morning hours of Sunday, June 29. That break was repaired by a contractor and city workers by late afternoon on Monday, June 30.

A previous break in an 8-inch pipe behind St. Martinville Senior High and the St. Martin STEAM Academy was fixed by city crews on Thursday, June 26.
