50 Years Ago July 9, 1975
St. Martin Parish school board members agreed to proceed with plans to construct the parish’s first all-weather surface track at the new Breaux Bridge Sr. High School. Board members authorized the advertisement for bids on a modern track facility with a rubberized asphalt surface. The facility will be first track in the parish without a dirt surface and its use will be shared by all six ( junior and senior high schools.
The St. Martinville City Council directed the city attorney to begin drawing up the necessary legal documents for the annexation of property on the south end the town where a new shopping center was to be developed.
Paul Benoit was distinctly recognized during a special Court of Honor hosted by the Cecilia Boy Scout Troop 23 at the St. Joseph Church Hall where he was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout.
Winners in the Greased Pole competition at the St. Martinville 4th of July celebration were: Douglas Bienvenu, Kenny Smith, Bryan Lasseigne, Noel Talley and Jeffery Camille, $20; Glen Estillette. Louis Nassans, Chris LeBlanc, Greg Robertson. Robert Estillette, Todd Dugas and Todd Alford, $10; and Glen Estillette, $5.
40 Years Ago July 10, 1985
A crew from the state Highway Department completed the installation of the long-awaited traffic signal at the intersection of Rees and Bridge Streets in Breaux Bridge. Although the signal helped ease congestion at the busy intersection, it did not provide for a protected left turn from Bridge onto Rees.
The opulent Robert Sutton estate, popularly known as Paradise Mansion, was sold at public auction to a Baton Rouge businessman for $800.000.
St. Martin Parish had the distinction of participating in the passage of the Olympic Flame on its way to the National Sports Festival.
The St. Martin Parish Tourism Commission made preliminary plans to acquire a building along I-10 for use as a tourist information approxicenter.
Annabelle Krewitz and Evelyne Goller of the Breaux Bridge Historical Society presented Mayor Vance Theriot with a plaque commemorating the arrival of Acadian settlers in the Breaux Bridge area between 1765 and 1785.

In keeping with the newly implemented “home rule” charter government, St. Martin Parish President Scott Angelle submitted a new personnel policy to the Parish Council, in effect abolishing the Civil Service system for St. Martin.
St. Martin de Tours Council 1276 Grand Knight Todd Fuselier presented Caliste Bergeron with the Knight of the Year award at the club’s annual banquet.
The BAYSI Tigers team claimed first place honors in the Coach Pitch Division (age 8) of the Breaux Bridge Athletic Asosciation Classic tournament. Members were William Delhomme, Hunter Landry, Aaron Thevenet, Logan Sonnier, Sam Trahan, Nicholas Stelly, Alex Angelle, Trent Collette, Alex Arnaud, Lane Theriot, Brent Owens and Jake Stelly. Coaches were Tim Trahan, Matt Sonnier, René Thevenet, Andy Arnaud and David Duhon.
The waters of Lake Dauterive and Lake Fausse Pointe challenged the skills of anglers with the Catahoula Bass Association for their June 25 tournament. But Danny Bulliard and Jason Courville met the challenge and topped the field. The Bullard/Courville duo brought in a five-bass limit that weighed an aggregate 14.17 pounds to easily claim first place honors among the nine boat competition. The stringer also included the tournament’s biggest bass, a nice 3.62- pounder.

Cliff Dore, director of Training and S.E.R.T. commander for the St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office, received the 2015 American Legion “Law Enforcement Officer Of The Year” award. The plaque was presented by Will Horn, commander of the American Legion, Richard Champagne Post 289, in Parks.
