Baja St. Martin

Rain, rain, more rain! Are we ever satisfied? Either too much or too little. My yard is lush and green. Branches on my small trees are almost touching the ground. So far, the TV info seems to be pretty accurate. The rain storms are relatively mild, maybe a bit more but don’t last long. Kind of nice to have it a little cooler.

It’s quiet over here lately. A little crawfishing continues but not much. The Belle River boat landing is all dry but not very neat. The levee board or someone scraped the worst mess up into several piles but the remaining surface is just sort of messy. Enter and exit signs are tilted or bent down but people seem to be using the correct ones.

Belle River is rising. I wonder what the situation with the Bayou Chene structure will result in for those of us on the river. My house has never been in danger of flooding although the water has come up under the house to the back door. I assume if there is a huge amount of rain and the Chene structure is closed all that water would stay in the river. If the structure is closed as I hear it is now, then excess spillway water would not come back around in here. If it’s open, then excess spillway water could back into Belle River .

I will write up a separate article about the sheriff’s luncheon. It was very nice. Box lunches were available. The Sheriff spoke briefly, Terry Guidry for Homeland Security spoke. At scheduled lunch time, not many people had come and I was a little disappointed, but they began filtering in so attendance was decent. Wish more of my commodity people had come. The deputy calling Bingo was really good.

Possibly because of the rain, Father’s Day on Belle River was quiet. Not that many boats and only a few of the fast, noisy ones. The Spunky Monkey was packed. Vehicles parked everywhere.

The rain has stopped now and the sky is getting lighter but no sun yet.

I guess I will tell you that I bought a new computer keyboard, followed instructions but my desktop PC only gave me a black screen with no print option. As always I called my daughter in Florida and she happened to be out in a boat but still gave me some suggestions which didn’t help. So the next day I just thought of asking my neighbor if she had any expertise with computers. She walked over, and had no idea what the problem was but just before leaving she casually said, “Did you press enter?” So she reached over my shoulder, pressed Enter and the screen lit up and everything was working perfectly. I guess I should have done that and thought I had, but apparently not. I felt pretty stupid but so happy.

Oh, and I got a jury summons which thankfully included a form to fill out and return if you sought exemption for age. I have done that and assume the proper persons will get my request. Jury duty from here means an entire day driving to St. Martinville and sitting in a courtroom for hours. I’m hearing the price of gas may be going up a lot soon, so the jury duty fee would not even cover one way.

A friend and I are starting a Chair Yoga program to be held in the Belle River Community Center. I know it’s a long way away for you, but if you know of anyone who might be interested closer to here, tell them to call me. I’d like to get an instructor but think we’ll settle or a video DVD program. So far we’re just beginning to advertise and have about 5 people interested, maybe 6. We’re not looking to have a big class, just to get some gentle exercise for us old folks and/ or people with medical issues.
