100 Years Ago JUNE 27, 1925

St. Martinville was largely represented again at the Citizens Military Training Camps. For the past four years St. Martinville furnished boys for this government training, and each year the number was doubled. To some people this is a new and uninteresting affair, but every, father, mother, in fact every one should know what a Citizen Military Training Camp is. The government furnished free transportation to and from camp including meals while traveling, clothing, meals, in fact all expenses, were paid by the government tor thirty days.

A well attended meeting at the City Hall, heard the plans from National Movement for Evangeline Monument submitted by Mrs. A. A. Anding, President of the National organization and Mr. Arthur C. Morgan, noted sculptor, who would soon be at work on a clay model. It was necessary to raise one thousand dollars to get the necessary data and publications and printing to get the matter well started, which amount will soon be raised.

50 Years Ago JUNE 25, 1975

Bavou Benoit residents were fighting a Levee Board order to move their homes and appealed to the St. Martin Parish Police Jury provide financial assistance to them if they did move. A spokesman for the group told the jury that the Corps of Engineers, which intended to raise a two-mile stretch of levee at Benoit and would have to take court action to get them off.

City officials from Breaux Bridge asked the St. Martin Police Jury to adopt an ordinance regulating ambulance service throughout the parish.

Newman Braud of St. Martinville was re-elected to serve another term as a minority representative on the board of directors of the Evangeline Economic Development District serving the eight-parish Acadiana area. Braud who was director of curriculum and instruction for the St. Martin Parish School public schools, served with four other minority representatives on the 20-member board..

Lynette LeDoux, Mercy High 4-H Club member and Cliff Durand, III, St. Martinville High 4-H club member, attended the 4H Leadership Conference held on the LSU Campus in Baton Rouge. The conference was attended by outstanding high school 4-H club members throughout the state.

25 Years Ago JUNE 28, 2000

Officials governing the town of Henderson for the next four years were formally installed during ceremonies. They included Mayor Earl J. Patin, Police Chief Fred Hayes, and council members William Le-Grand, Ray Robin, Dale Duplechien, Harold Robin and Sherbin Collette.

CableTV subscribers in Parks, Breaux Bridge, Henderson, St. Martinville and some rural areas received up to 22 new channels. Some subscribers paid at least $5 more for the service to expanded cable, Expanded service in rebuilt areas - those where new lines were installed - increased from $12.19 to $17.89 per month, a $5.70 bump before franchise fees and sales taxes. The following 22 channels - with the channel number in parentheses were added: Animal Planet, MSNBC, FX, Home and Garden TV, QVC, Univision, ESPN2, Bravo, Cartoon Network, Comedy Central, Food Network, MTV TV Guide, Fox News, C-SPAN PAX TV, Discovery Health, History Channel, Oxygen, TV Land, Fox Sports Southwest and C-SPAN2.

St. Martinville Chamber of Commerce officers for the 2000-01 session included Mary Leece, president; Guy Cormier, vice president; Fay Maraist, secretary; and Lena Fuselier, treasurer.

St. Martinville native Sister Theresa Wiltz was honored during a Mass and reception at Notre Dame Catholic Church on the occasion of her 50th anniversary as a member of the Sisters of the Holy Family. She took her vows in June 1950 at the order’s mother house in New Orleans.

10 Years Ago JUNE 24, 2015

Past District Governor Linwood Broussard helped install the 2015-16 slate of officers for the St. Martinville Rotary Club during a banquet held at La Maison. Penny Granger, became the club’s rrs woman president. Other officers were Michael O’Brien, outgoing president; Jamie Castille, president-elect; Becky Patin, secretary; Henri C. Bienvenu, treasurer; Ross Bernard, sergeant-at-arms; and Mike Formeller and Brian Friend, directors.

AT THE LOUISIANA FARM BUREAU’S 93rd annual meeting in New Orleans June 2528, the St. Martin Parish Women’s Leadership Committee was awarded the 2014 WLC Award of Excellence at the La. Farm Bureau’s 93rd annual meetin in New Orleans. The award recognized the critical role farm women play in volunteer activities and rural life..
