Breaux Bridge - The June meeting of the Breaux Bridge City Council focused on im - portant water manage - ment projects for Bayou Teche, transparency in council proceedings, and a formal partnership for tree disposal, all in prep - aration for the upcoming fiscal year.
Guest speaker Don - ald Segura, Director of the Teche-Vermilion Fresh Water District, ad - dressed the council.
"Our mission is to maintain water quality in Bayou Teche and the Vermilion River," Segura told the council. "And we do this by maintaining a water flow throughout the watershed.
"When there is suf - ficient rainfall, there is enough water to main - tain the water flow. When there is not sufficient rainfall, we have a pump station on the Atchafa - laya River north of Krotz Springs, to pump water into the system to main - tain the water flow." Segura said that at a December meeting in New Orleans, the U.S. Army Corps of Engi - neers said that there is a planned project for the Corps to snag and clear trees and other branches from Bayou Teche from Keystone Locks to Arnaudville which is planned to start soon but that the Corps first needed to get some smaller equipment to do the job because the large equipment they use was too big for the bayou and the locks.
A four-year project to replace a water con - trol structure between Bayou Teche and the Vermilion River is in the works.
The council agreed to issue a resolution sup - porting these projects to help expedite their start.
The council discussed a proposed ordinance to allow taping and broad - casting of meetings. The ordinance will be up for a vote in July.

The council passed a resolution for Mayor Ricky Calais to formalize an agreement with Hebert’s Tree and Stump Removal.
The agreement allows Hebert’s to use city property (the “old city dump”) for burning and disposing of trees and stumps, while the city can also use the property for its own tree disposal needs.
“Basically they use city property, the old city dump, and they take care of helping the city burn and dispose of trees and stumps,” Calais said. “This agreement allows them to continue to use city property and allows us to go onto the property to dispose of trees that we cut down.”
With no further business, the meeting was adjourned.
