100 Years Ago JUNE 20, 1925

The baseball game last Sunday between St. Martinville and Loreauville was the poorest game of the season, won by St. Martinville. The score was 17 to 6.

The mosquitoes arrived here the past week by the millions, and farmers say it was impossible to do any work in the field, neither man or mule could stand the pest.

A dance to take place at the Levert Gymnasium was announced, with music by Peck’s Bad Boys Orchestra of Louisville, Ky. The music it was said, was fine. This dance was under the management of the Stanley Barras Post No. 71 of the American Legion.

Feature presentations at the Bienvenu Theatre were Anna Q. Nilsson in “Half a Dollar Bill”, Elinos Glyns in “His Hour” with John Gilbert and Aileen Pringle; Elaine Hammenstein in “The Midnight Express”; and Claire Windson and Bert Lytell in “A Son of the Sahara”.

50 Years Ago JUNE 18, 1975

Isadore Inman, director of St. Martin Parish’s Environmental Education Program was selected the “Teacher of the Year” from Louisiana in the National Association of Conservation Districts Allis Chalmers Education Awards Program in environmental conservation..

A new sugar cane variety, C. P. 67-412, was released to Louisiana cane growers for planting the current year. The release was approved by the American Sugar Cane League’s Contact Committee at its meeting held in Houma. The new variety was described as having the ability to produce good tonnage. Also, it was resistant to cane borers, and fair in sugar content.

The Soil Conservation Service of the United States Department of Agriculture has prepared an environmental assessment of Upper Bayou Teche drainage project. The assessment indicated that the planned action would not harm the environment on a local, regional, or national scale and would not be a subject of important controversy. The project purposes were watershed protection and flood prevention. The planned works of improvement included conservation land treatment and 27 miles of channel work.

New officers of the Zeta Kappa chapter of Beta Sigma Phi 111, Breaux Bridge, were installed during special ceremonies They included: Sylvia Green, president: Priscilla Breaux. vice president; Emily Dever, corresponding secretary; Lou Ella Blanchard, recording secretary: Betty Frederick. treasurer; Bonnie Landry, extension officer.

25 Years Ago JUNE 21, 2000

St. Martinville Cultural Heritage Center consultant Horatio Handy told the City Council that he received word that the city was in line to receive a $40,000 grant to microfilm and digitize the aging records at St. Martin de Tours Catholic Church.

Work was underway on the “travel center” being developed along the southeast corner of Rees Street and 1-10 in Breaux Bridge. The Pilot Corporation of Knoxville, Tenn., and Rosbottom Interests of Shreveport are building a truck stop/gaming facility on 8.85 acres.

Recently elected officers of the St. Martinville Rotary Club were formally installed by senior Rotarian Roland Bienvenu of Lafayette during a banquet held at Maison de Ville. Officers who lead the club during 2000-01 included Allen Blanchard, president; Pat Theriot, immediate past president/director; Baxter Deal, presidentelect; Lawrence Patin, treasurer; Paul “Bully” Resweber, sergeant-at-arms; and C. Thomas Bienvenu Jr., secretary.

Breaux Bridge’s Jake Delhomme was among eight notable Louisiana sports ggure inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in Natchitoches.

The Parks Knights of Columbus, St. Joseph Council 4927 elected new officers for 201516. They were Deno Boudreaux, grand knight; Leonard Champagne, deputy grand knight; Paul Billiot Jr., chancellor; Andrew Chauvin, recorder; Rogers Louviere, treasurer; Don “Tuffy” Resweber, advocate; Michael DeBlanc, nnancia secretary; Phil Barras, warden; Darrell Theriot, inside guard; Anthony Billiot, outside guard; and Ben Courville, John Girouard and Curt Degeyter, trustees.
