100 Years Ago JUNE 13, 1925

The Catholic Church at Parks has been completed, which church stands as a credit to the people of that town and surrounding country, it a pretty church. The only thing that remains to do now is the building of the pews, and we hope that this will soon be completed.

Last Monday and Tuesday, we had the heaviest rains in two years, and which was just what was wanted by the farmers, a slow, continuous rain, without wind, giving an abundance of water, over five inches of rainfall in two days, we believe satisfied the want of farmers in all sections as it was a general rain. This rain will save all our crops, which, as a general rule, are the best ever known in this parish.

Feature presentations at the Bienvenu Theatre were “Pioneer Trails” with Alice Calhoun; “The Wife of the Centour” starring Aileen Pringle and John Gilbert; “Picture and Cat Comedy”; and “Why Men Leave Home”.

After experimenting with approximately 175 varieties of sugar cane in an effort to find varieties that will successfully resist the mosaic disease which seriously crippled the industry in Louisiana, two varieties have been found that will not only resist the disease but will give an abundant yield, according to Harry Wilson, state commissioner of agriculture and immigration. The variety known as P. O. J. 234 is excellently adapted for culture to yield sugar while the Cayana is a syrup cane that is adaptable to the hill parishes.

50 Years Ago JUNE 11, 1975

The newly appointed veteran service officer for the parish of St Martin was Terry Angelle, a native of Cecilia. Angelle succeeded Jimmy Bergeron, who was promoted to the Veteran’s Claim Office In New Orleans.

Father Thomas Mullaly discussed last minute details with officers of the Notre Dame Youth Group as the St. Martinville teenagers prepared to depart Saturday night via chartered bus tor Washington, D.C. Youth Group officers were Shantley Guidry, treasurer: Walter Lewis, president. Cleveland George, vice president: and Sherman Jones, secretary.

Two 1975 graduates of St. Martinville Sr. High have been awarded full scholarships to Tulane University in New Orleans. Andy Lasseigne and Sherman Jones each were awarded scholarships worth over $4,000 per year. Andy was valedictorian of this year’s class and Sherman was among the honor graduates. In addition to their scholastic honors. both were standout athletes at SMSH, Andy earning honors in three sports and named to the All-State Football squad as a junior; and Sherman served as team captain of the Class AAA state championship basketball team.

John D. Berard, 1975 graduate of Breaux Bridge Senior High School, received his Certificate of Acceptance into the Navy Reserve Officers Training Corps during the school’s Commencement excercises. Officers of the Breaux Bridge Catholic Daughters Court St. Paul included, Mrs. Clayton Castille, regent; Mrs. John Trosclair, 1st vice regent; Mrs. Terry Frederick, 2nd vice regent; Joanna Breaux, financial secretary; Miss Jeanne Castille, organist; Rosa Lemoine, lecturer: Mrs. Charles Lillie, monitor: Mrs. Andrew Bienvenu. treasurer: Dorothy Bernard, recording secretary; Rev. Guy Lemoine. chaplain; and Mrs. Lynn Romero, Mrs. Elsie Castille, and Mrs. Porche, trustees.

25 Years Ago JUNE 14, 2000

Winners in the annual Miss Breaux Bridge pageant included Lexi LeBlanc, Miss Breaux Bridge 2000; Sadie Miller, Jr. Miss BB; and Cassie Berard, Teen Miss BB.

Parishioners of St. Bernard Catholic Church in Breaux Bridge gathered for ground breaking ceremonies on their Msgr. P.A. Borel Community Center.

The Business Department at Breaux Bridge High announced that Devin LeBlanc, Camille Duhon and Lyndsy Caillier were selected to represent Louisiana in the prestigious 2015 Microsoft Office Specialist U.S. National Championship in Orlando, Fla.

Breaux Bridge native Chaz Hebert recorded his rrs career complete game of his professional baseball career, tossing a vvehitter as Class A Advance Tampa Yankees edged Clearwater 1-0 at Steinbrenner Field. He was a 2011 graduate of Breaux Bridge High.

Beta Rho Members who progressed to higher degrees in Beta Sigma Phi were, Arleen Oubre and Reggie Maraist, Order of the Rose; Gerry LeBlanc and Charlotte Chataignier, Masters Degree; Louella Champagne, president; Bobbie Theriot, Elaine Case, Lynnie Bienvenu and Shirley Fuselier, Torch Bearers.
