100 Years Ago JUNE 6, 1925

The Southern Pacific railroad ran an excursion train to Port Arthur, Texas beginning at 5:45 a m., and returning (will leave) Port Arthur at 7:40 p.m., the same day. The fare for the round trip was $4.50.

Feature presentations at the Bienvenu Theatre were “To the Ladies”; “Sinner’s Silk”; Kenneth Darlin in “The Broken Wing”; and Barbara La Marr in “Sandra”.

Mr. Devince Bienvenu leased and took charge of the filling station of Mr. J. G. Durand at the north end of Main Street, moved his battery station to that place, where he served his customers.

50 Years Ago JUNE 4, 1975

Activity at Martin Mills was on the upswing with employees working at full capacity after almost five months of reduced operations caused by the national economic slump. Employment climbed to 953, the highest ever, and R.R. Jefferson, vice president of Martin Mills, said the figure should go over 1,000 as new sewing units were installed in the recently expanded plant.

In action concerning the new city park in Breaux Bridge, the council approved the naming of the new recreation area as “Parc Hardy” in honor of the family which sold the property tor the park.

Don Robert of Jay’s Auto Parts, in Breaux Bridge, received a special “Mystery Shopper” Award from a representative of The Gates Rubber Company, Denver, Colorado. The award, a special “Silver Dollar” plaque, was presented to Robert for exceptional customer service.

Patricia LeBlanc of Henderson proved to be the most successful fisherman in the Junior division of the Fishing Rodeo sponsored by the St. Martinville Jaycees. She took first and second place in the bass category and second place in sac-a-lait to accumulate seven points and win the Outstanding Jr. Fisherman award. Her big bass tipped the scales at 2 lbs. 11/2 oz.

25 Years Ago JUNE 7, 2000

On June 1, 2000, members of the Breaux Bridge Volunteer Fire Co. took delivery of a refurbished 1981 Duplex 1,250 gallons-per-minute pumper to bolster the department’s fire-fighting arsenal. On hand to inspect the unit were firefighters Andre Pellerin and Butch LeBlanc, Fire Chief Burton Dupuis, Parish Fire District Coordinator James Hebert, and volunteers Allen Broussard and Paul Thevenet. The truck was purchased from Ferrara Fire Apparatus Inc. for $64,500, with $32,250 provided by the BBVFC using funds raised through its annual barbeque drive and a matching amount from the department’s annual fire district allocation. The refurbished unit replaces an old 1968 GMC 750 gpm pumper.

Groundbreaking ceremonies were held May 30 for the new St. Martinville Jr. High School to be built along La. 31/Main Hwy. south of St. Martinville. The $8,378,900 project is located at the southwest intersection of Main Hwy. and Clover Hill Road.

Winners of the 2000 Pinewood Derby of Trinity Cub Scouts Pack 175 were Cameron Fuselier, Tiger Cub: Holden Babineaux, Wolf; Caleb Dore, Bear; and Kristopher Simon and Wyatt Tabor, Webelos.

Grocery prices included 6 pk., 12 oz. Coke $1.68; 6 pk. 1/2 Liter Coke - 2/$5; Boston Butt Pork Roast - 77¢/lb.; and 13 oz. Luzianne Coffee - $1.66.

First place winners of the Math Fact Tournament held at Parks Primary School included Keith Williams, pre-K; Randall Hebert, kindergarten; Tara Poirier, 1st grade; Kye Landry, 2nd; Jace Broussard, 3rd; and Jebby Soignier, 4th.

10 Years Ago JUNE 3, 2015

Hailie Williams and Kailie Williams were chosen by the Knights of Columbus Fourth Degree as “Outstanding Altar Servers” at the Notre Dame Catholic Church. On hand for the presentation were Viola George, grandmother, Tony Duplantis, Knights of Columbus, and Fr. Agustinus, pastor of Notre Dame Church.

Catahoula Elementary Citizenship Award winners for April were Reese Bulliard, Conley Melancon, Gage Judice, Gracie Broussard, Ty Gardemal, Korbin Daspit, Mia Foti, Kain Comeaux, Kody LeBlanc and Brielle Casey.
