100 Years Ago MAY 23, 1925

A large number of persons from St. Martinville and other places visited the Cypress Island oil field Sunday, to see the operation of drilling the first well in that part of the parish. The well was down 700 to 1000 feet, and in sand and gravel. A 15 inch pipe was put down several hundred feet and set in cement.

As was predicted by the Bureau of Agriculture, that the top cotton crop of last year would breed an immense crop for this year, few of our cotton farmers seem to believe it. There are only few fields where the cotton is large enough to commence to produce squares and a few bolls, but already the weevil is there waiting for the cotton. From the information we have at this early date, the weevil is everywhere.

50 Years Ago MAY 21, 1975

The Breaux Bridge City Council adopted a new beer and liquor permit ordinance which included a curfew section for bars and lounges. Under the new ordinance, all bars and lounges located within the corporate limits of Breaux Bridge have to close their doors between the hours of 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. daily.

Honor graduates of the first graduating class of St. Martin Academy were Sandra Duchamp and Roberta Duplantis, valedictorians; and Bonnie Landry, salutatorian.

Major General O. J. Daigle Jr., Louisiana Adjutant General, announced that Company B (Medical), 199th Support Battalion, received the highest award in the Louisiana Army National Guard and will be presented the ‘Eisenhower Trophy” at a formal presentation for receiving the highest figure of merit in personnel, training and administration during the 1973-74 training period.

25 Years Ago May 24, 2000

Ten students in St. Martin public schools graduated with perfect 4.0 grade point averages. The valedictorians of the Class of 2000 included Terracia Rogers, Carli Beckett, Rachel Malveaux, Jude Knight and Greg Guidry, all of St. Martinville Sr. High; Amanda Martin, Renée Devillier and Olivia Berard, all of Breaux Bridge High; and Ben Robin and Loni Guidry of Cecilia High.

This year’s salutatorians were Matt Landry and Ryan Theriot of BBHS; Laura Berard of CHS and Shatona Berard and Nicole Baudoin of SMSH.

Mayor Eric Martin of St. Martinville joined Louisiana Tourism Secretary Phillip Jones in cutting the ribbon to mark the opening of the Acadian Farmstead in Longfellow-Evangeline Historic Site. The farmstead covers an 8-acre portion of the park along Bayou Teche and will re-create a typical Acadian farm as it would have been around 1800.

The town of Henderson will get a lot bigger in a month’s time if all goes according to plan. The Town Council approved an ordinance to complete the proposed Cajun Palms/Henderson North Annexation. A 30-day period in which the action can be contested starts with the publication of a notice in this issue of Teche News. According to Mayor Sherbin Collette, no further action is required from the council. After 30 days, the annexation will be complete.

Presented by the Brewers Association and in its eighth year, SAVOR was the premier beer and food pairing event in the U.S.
