BB Council reviews budgets, approves traffic study

The Breaux Bridge City Council’s May meeting was brief but productive, focusing primarily on the city’s finances and future development opportunities.

Mayor Ricky Calais presented both the amended 2024-2025 budget and the proposed 2025-2026 budget to the council. The council introduced ordinances for both budgets, setting them up for a vote at the June meeting, which will be the final meeting of the fiscal year.

The council also authorized engineering firm Neel-Shaeffer to conduct a traffic study on Rees Street, stretching from Latiolais Drive to one mile north of Interstate 10.

“This is in anticipation of future development in the northwest quadrant of I-10,” Mayor Calais explained.

Additionally, the council approved continued membership in the Acadiana Metropolitan Planning Organization for the upcoming year.

Mayor Calais reported that the city collected $669,826 in sales tax revenue for April, putting Breaux Bridge $199,996 over budget compared to the same period last year.

In other business, the mayor announced that reconstruction on Gary Drive began May 14. The council also approved an application to the Acadiana Planning Commission for sidewalks along the northern section of Berard Street and along Mills Avenue. The Phase 3 portion of the Parkway Ridge Subdivision also received council approval.

With no further business, the council adjourned until its next meeting in June.
