Three arrested in connection with attempt to smuggle contraband into St. Martin Correctional Center

St. Martinville – Three people were arrested recently in connection with an attempt to smuggle contraband into the St. Martin Parish Correctional Center, St. Martin Parish Sheriff Becket Breaux said.

Deputies with the St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office made the arrests after an investigation that began when an inmate at the correctional center, Antonio Potier, 28, was transported to a local hospital for treatment of an illness.

While at the hospital, a female suspect, Colasha Nalsha Joseph, 20, of Lafayette, attempted to drop off a package containing illegal drugs in a restroom, Breaux said.

Deputies subsequently conducted a search of the area and recovered the contraband. As the investigation continued, a third suspect was identified as another inmate, Javien Demouchet, 32.

Ultimately, all three were arrested and charged as follows:

• Colasha Nalsha Joseph charged under LA R.S.-14:402.1Principal to taking contraband to a stateowned hospital; LA. R.S. 14:27/14:402-Attempted contraband in a penal institution; and LA. R.S. 14:26-Criminal conspiracy;

• Antonio Potier charged under LA R.S.-14:402.1-Principal to taking contraband to a state-owned hospital; LA. R.S. 14:27/14:402-Attempted contraband in a penal institution; and LA. R.S. 14:26-Criminal conspiracy

• Javien Demouchet, charged under LA R.S.14:402.1-Principal to taking contraband to a state-owned hospital; LA. R.S. 14:27/14:402-Attempted contraband in a penal institution; and LA. R.S. 14:26-Criminal conspiracy.

The investigation remains ongoing.
