Once again I passed the construction activity along Hwy. 70 just before reaching the turnoff into Stephensville. This time I actually found out that all the concrete posts were really the foundation posts for a future camp and a similar one is now being constructed next to this one. I was told this was Doiron property but don’t know that for sure. For sure I can see that whatever type of camp will eventually be placed atop the concrete posts will sure be a significant one in size.
Since the possibility of flooding in this area is still prevalent, I assume whomever is going to live here is making sure they are ready for water. Which, by the way, has not risen any more and is said to be approaching falling The Belle River landing parking l lot is still under water with boats using just one ramp to launch boats. Everyone, or almost everyone is using just one drive to enter and exit making traffic a bit iffy. I confess to saying some nasty words under my breath when I went up a drive and met a vehicle coming the other way illegally. Then I discovered that this was the only drive that could be used because of water and debris. Trucks could navigate the parking lot even through the water but not cars. And of course, the water covered lot is littered with pretty big driftwood. So now I enter and leave via the one drive and go very slow just in case someone is coming the other way.
I was told a large alligator has been seen in the parking lot in the water but I have not seen it. Wouldn’t surprise me at all.
It is quite cool these past few days following a little rain. Not enough to really water the plants and grass but staving off drought a little.
I’m adding to this a few days later and it is raining steadily. An hour ago the rain was so heavy I couldn’t see across my front deck, leading me to cancel out a meeting I had scheduled this morning. Now, of course, the rain has let up, but it was just pounding down for awhile and I didn’t feel like driving miles in the deluge.
It is cool. My house has a tin roof so the rain drops make a lot of noise. Kind of nice. Thunder rumbling now and then.
A friend sent me a link recently to Phillippe Petit’s site on You Tube so I watched him walk the wire between the Trade Center buildings back in l974. I never saw him do this but Man on Wire has received multiple prizes, not just for the action but how it was accomplished. Petit is in his 60s now and I think the video interview said he was thinking of doing a wire walk across a part of the Grand Canyon . Or maybe already done that.
I also recently read the back page of a Southern Living magazine and an article by a guy named Rick Bragg –a really funny article about reality TV , particularly the shows about people locating big, big python snakes in logs in the Everglades. Sticking their heads into logs underwater to catch the reptiles. In all the humor, Bragg pointed out that the quantity of these snakes has devastated the Everglades. Anyway, the article sent me into the dentists’ chair laughing which was unusual.
The rain has stopped now that I’ve cancelled my meeting but it is very quiet out. No vehicles on the road. Someone told me the fishermen are getting $1/lb for crawfish but I have no idea if that’s true or even close. I am seeing a fair number of boats being hauled away from the landing with flattened traps. Teche News’ Lower St. Martin correspondent, Linda Cooke, can be emailed at lindacooke1939@ gmail.com.
