Baja St. Martin

Somehow I managed to lose the Baja column I’d started and planned to finish this morning so I’ll start over.

Easter was quiet here with some fast boat traffic on Belle River early on Sunday then quiet the rest of the day. It was quiet all day. The noisy time was the Good Friday weekend with boats roaring up and down Belle River and the Belle River landing packed with vehicles. I did not see a lot of crawfish being hauled hither and yon.

Usually, when boats pass my house the week before Easter they are piled with purple and green crawfish sacks but not this year. Of course I don’t see them all day but several local friends say they haven’t seen much either.

The water is coming up. Belle River is not much different, maybe a little higher which you can tell because the bridge sections are either higher or lower. You have to be careful crossing I think. My car is small and low and if I go across when the water is low my front bumper almost hits the pavement.

I did notice that the water in the spillway is now approaching the pavilion floor - not touching it, but coming close. I keep hearing all the flood warnings. My sister asked where the water was coming from and I was hard pressed to tell her. She doesn’t have any snow and I don’t think snow melt adds much water here but I guess there has been a lot of rain to our north in some places. Sorry, I’m so ignorant.

I keep waiting for rain and not a drop yet. I water my little garden box every day.

My lawn mower guy found I had a water line leak which is probably why my water bill has been a bit high. I should have noticed but since St. Martin added a substantial amount to our water bills for sewage, I didn’t realize maybe my bill amount was higher than it should have been. Anyway, a dear friend came when I called and with a minimal amount of digging found the leak. He managed to fix it temporarily but is coming back today to make more permanent repairs. The leak was where a line was spliced probably 30 years ago and the connection had slipped.

Food for Seniors was April 24 and since that was in the middle of early voting, I handed out the food boxes from the Stephensville Fire Station truck bay, not the meeting room. I have been told to not take any new customers for the boxes, at least for now. Not sure why but it’s not a problem. Everybody who has been getting food will continue to do so as far as I know.

The BR building has been rented every Saturday in April. It’s a nice venue. Clean and bright. Parties for children are popular there especially since the playground is right next to the building and the walking trail is there. It’s just a nice place.

And the Smith’s mastermind the twice monthly Bingo for Senior games which are so popular. The games are strictly non-profit. Gordon and Faye have been doing this for at least 10 years .

Sorry to make an unpleasant seque, but I read the book Conclave recently and now hear that Pope Francis has died. I wonder how true the book’s details will turn out to be. I thought the book was a little too much ‘soap opera’ style. That seems somehow inappropriate now.
