100 Years Ago MAY 2, 1925

Some bold and slick thief made a haul of Mr. Louis F. Marais’ chicken coop Tuesday night, and stole thirty out of his forty flock of fine white chickens The chicken house is not far from Mr. Maraist’s house, and he cannot understand how so many chickens could be stolen without making any noise to awaken some in the house or the neighbors. It was a slick job and must have been done by one who is an expert in this game.

Featured at the Bienvenu Theatre were Barbara La Marr in The White Moth; Her Temporary Husband; and Mildred Harris in One Law for the Woman.

Arnaudville shipped its fifth carload of cabbage this season. It was bid in by H. A. Guidry, a local produce dealer. The price paid the farmers was $9 per ton.

The heavy rain which fell here Monday afternoon came as a blessing to this entire section. The rain did not fall for a long time, but it was heavy and will prove of much good to all crops which were beginning to show bad effect of the long drought.

50 Years Ago April 30, 1975

Residents of St. Martinville and the surrounding area were still shaking off the shock of last Wednesday’s violent weather and clearing away the massive amounts of debris left after tornado-like winds raked the area. The storm struck with little or no warning shortly after 4:30 p.m. causing widespread damage in St. Martinville, Cypress Island, Coteau Holmes and Bayou Benoit. Winds of up to 85 MPH were recorded and a drenching rain accompanied the storm..

The Louisiana Department of Highways was in the process of acquiring rights of way for the widening and resurfacing of La. Highway 347 between Breaux Bridge and Cecilia. The eight mile project had been in the planning stages for several years and the right of way acquisition was the last step before the actual advertisement for bids.

Leah Barron was selected to serve as the 1975 Crawfish Queen during the annual coronation ball in the VFW Hall here. Selected as first maid was Julie Angelle, second maid. Mina Castille, and named third maid was Barbara Broussard

25 Years Ago May 3, 2000

Breaux Bridge High School senior Christina Goodie was named the first Afro-American Crawfish Festival Queen during a pageant held Sunday afternoon. Chastity Mercier was named first maid, and Kayla Anthony was chosen as second maid.

As part of the observance of the 30th anniversary of Earth Day, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced the investment of over $6.5 million in Rural Utilities Service (RUS) loan and grant funds for the construction of centralized public wastewater collection and treatment systems to serve the town of Henderson and the rural portion of the parish in the general Cecilia area.

Crystal LeBlanc of Arnaudville was crowned Miss Etouffée 2000 during the annual Etouffée Festival Beauty Pageant. Serving on her court were 1st alternate, Erika Sonnier of Breaux Bridge; 2nd alternate Angel Mazurkiewicz of Opelousas; and 3rd alternates Angie Olivier of Parks and Diona Berard of Breaux Bridge.

Severe supercells – described in weatherman terms as a “mesocyclone,” a towering, rotating thunderstorm – ripped across southern Louisiana Friday afternoon and again Monday morning, leaving damage from freaky straightline winds and hail as large as baseballs. A family home on Grand Bois Road was torn apart in Friday’s onslaught. Thousands of people were left without electric power and numerous huge oaks were felled. Two 18-wheelers were overturned on I-10 Friday.

Lafayette Diocese Bishop Michael Jarrell announced that Trinity Catholic School in St. Martinville would “be allowed to close” at the end of the current academic year..
