Breaux Bridge man sentenced to 40 years for manslaughter

A Breaux Bridge man who had been unanimously convicted on Nov. 17, 2023, by a St.

Martin Parish jury of manslaughter was sentenced on April 16 to 40 years at hard labor.

Sixteenth Judicial District Attorney Michael Haik III said that a sentencing hearing was held on April 16 before the Honorable Suzanne DeMahy.

The hearing was for defendant Kieon Alex ander, who was convicted unanimously on Nov.

17, 2023, by a St. Martin parish jury for manslaughter in the killing of Miguel Edmond.

After the sentencing hearing and argument of counsel, Alexander was sentenced to serve 40 years at hard labor with the Department of Corrections with the first 20 years be - ing without the benefit of probation, parole or suspension of sentence.

The case involved the defendant, Alexan der, and co-defendant Cordell Batiste, planning to rob Edmond on Nov. 10, 2016.

Sentenced

However, at some point during the intended robbery, Alexander shot Edmond twice in the back, killing him, Haik said.

Officers with the Breaux Bridge Police Department were able to locate and interview several witnesses, as well as locate shell casings and other physical evidence, which placed Alexander with the gun, pulling the trigger, and at the scene of the crime.

Assistant District Attorney Renee Louviere prosecuted the case with assistance from Jonathan Songy.

The case was investigated by the Breaux Bridge Police Department with assistance from the Acadiana Criminalistics Laboratory.

Haik commended them for their thorough and exhaustive investigation.
