Breaux Bridge advances in DII baseball playoffs

The Breaux Bridge High School Tigers swept their first two games of the Division II Non-Select baseball playoffs with DeRidder to advance to a regional playoff best-of-three series against No. 2 seed North DeSoto.

No. 15 seed Breaux Bridge beat No. 18 De-Ridder 4-3 on Thursday and 10-3 on Saturday in the best-of-three opening round.

Cecilia, the No. 19 seed in Non-Select Division II, lost a pair of games against No. 14 Minden on the road, falling 3-2 on Thursday and then 12-1 in five innings on Friday.

Breaux Bridge travels to North DeSoto for a best-of-three series on Thursday and Friday, with the Tigers set as the visiting team for Thursday’s 6 p.m. game.

BBHS is the home team for Friday’s 4 p.m. game, and is the road team if there is a third game set for approximately 7 p.m. on Friday.

In the first game of their best-of-three series against DeRidder on Thursday, the Tigers scored one run in the third inning and one in the fifth to lead 2-0 before the Dragons scored three runs with two out in the top of the seventh inning to threaten an upset.

BBHS answered with two runs in the bottom of the seventh to claim the win.

In the top of the seventh, after BBHS hurler Caynon Ardoin got a fly out to right fielder Christian Camacho and a strikeout of Cassle Montgomery, the Dragons rallied with singles by Logan Poteet and Kaydon Anderson followed by a game-tying two-run triple by Connor Rushford to right field. Hunter Roberts then singled to right field to push DeRidder ahead 3-2 before Roberts was caught stealing second to end the frame.

In the bottom of the seventh, Benjamin Ellender walked and Chase Broussard entered as a courtesy runner. Peyton Gonzalez singled with one out to advance Broussard to third, and Sam Armentor delivered an RBI sacrifice bunt to the pitcher to tie the score at 3-3.

Ardoin then singled to left field to bring Gonzalez home with the winning run.

Kyson Rebert went 2-for-3 with a triple, an RBI and a run scored. Gonzalez went 2-for-4 with a run. Armentor drove in two runs and Ardoin had a hit and an RBI.

On Saturday, the Tigers scored early and often, leading 1-0 after one inning and 3-0 after two before erupting with five runs in the top of the third and one in the top of the fourth. Breaux Bridge was the visiting team as teams alternate which squad is the home team in the best-of-three playoffs. BBHS added a run in the top of the seventh while DeRidder scored two in the bottom of the second and one in the seventh.

Peyton Gonzalez had three hits in five atbats for the Tigers. Sam Armentor had one hit ad drove in four runs. Charlie Frederick drove in a run and scored a run, Benjamin Ellender had a hit and an RBI and drew three walks and Cullen Laseter had a hit and scored a run.

Caynon Ardoin and Bryce Melancon each had a hit for the Tigers with Melancon scoring a run. Kamin Babin also had a hit and Evan Theriot and Kaleb Theriot each scored twice.

Sam Armentor pitched the first 3 1/3 innings and allowed two runs on four hits with four walks and two strikeouts to get the win. Kaleb Theriot pitched the final 3 2/3 innings, allowing one hit and one run with one walk and four strikeouts. The Tigers did not allow an earned run.

Softball

The Cecilia Lady Bulldogs won their Division II Non-Select playoff opener at Franklin Parish 7-4 on Saturday.

No. 20 seed Cecilia (8-19) advanced to a second-round matchup with No. 4 seed Iota (263) on Tuesday. Franklin Parish was seeded 13th in Division II.

Breaux Bridge (1415), seeded No. 22 in the playoffs, lost its opener at No. 11 seed North Vermilion, 11-0.
